New features for the DCS: F/A-18C Hornet targeting pod

Two new features are coming to the Litening II targeting pod on the DCS: F/A-18C Hornet and they have been detailed in a new video from Matt Wagner. Let’s have a look!

VVSL and Waypoint Slave mode

These are two refinements to the targeting pod system which seem like some very useful quality of life upgrades. First, the Velocity Vector Slave (VVSL) will slave the targeting pod camera to the same point as the velocity vector on your HUD. What does that mean? You can point your aircraft at a target and then use that point to refine your targeting pod lock. There’s been many times where I wanted to have a feature like that and so this is going to be very useful.

Second, we’re also getting a Waypoint Slave mode which will slave the pod’s camera to a waypoint. If your target has been set by waypoint, this will automatically put the camera on the waypoint again letting you further refine the targeting selection from there.

These are small features compared to the overall functionality of the pod, but they make a world of difference in some circumstances. These should be in the next update.

    Just loaded up the F-18 demo and definitely felt the love. The F-16 did nothing for me but the F-18 put a smile on my face right away. The cockpit feels familiar to that of the Harrier, and that’s just fine.

    Going to watch a few tutorials, see how manageable the system are, but I like this plane. If the complexity of dropping a 2000lb LGB doesn’t make my brain suffer, I’m probably buying it.

      There’s also a couple of CF-18 skins built right in so that’s always nice 😉

      The F/A-18 and AV-8B have been my two most consistently flown types. The procedures are very similar and the cockpits are definitely laid out in similar ways which makes going back and forth a bit easier.

      The F-16 is much more like the A-10 although certainly with its own unique spin too.

      LGB’s shouldn’t be too hard once you turn on the pod and trigger the laser. That part is a bit different from the AV-8B’s procedure though the practice is almost the same.

    I’m going to fly it some more today, it’s another day off it seems, so I’ll try some of the complicated stuff. One thing I really like is it’s heavy on my FFB2. You have to push a little. And you’re right about the systems being a bit familiar after the Harrier. And definitely want some Canadian skins.

    I watched a few Grim Reapers tutorial on the A-10C. It ain’t gonna happen. Love the plane, hate the systems. Sticking with the A-10A.

      Different aircraft seem to offer different appeal for folks. Glad the Hornet is working out well for you though! It’ll pair nicely with Supercarrier when it does arrive.
