Folks hoping to be able to fly out of RAF Akrotiri on the island of Cyrpus, located just outside of the current plans for the DCS: Syria map during early access launch will be pleased to know that plans are being made to expand the available naval area and then eventually add the island of Cyprus with its Royal Air Force air base of Akrotiri. Here’s what we know!

An update from Matt Wagner

We first got news of this expansion in a comment made near the end of his most recent DCS: Syria map video featuring the UH-1H Huey. In that video he said that the team was looking to extend the size of the map and add the island of Cyprus. That information has all but been confirmed now as Matt Wagner has taken to the DCS World forums to inform us of the plan.

Ugra has been listening to your concerns about lack of sea area for naval operations, and they have now greatly expanded the sea area to the west of the map. Cyprus is clearly missing in the attached image, but that will come later during the early access period. As mentioned in a previous video, we are still determining the how and when of how the addition of Cyprus (as huge undertaking) will be handled.

We’ve also been provided with an updated sample of the northern area of the map showing the slightly expanded waters off the coast of Syria and Lebanon.

Akrotiri base

As soon as the bounds of the map were announced there were many fans encouraging both extended space for naval operations along the coast as well as the inclusion of Cyrpus, no small ask mind you, and the RAF Akrotiri base.

The base has played a role in conflicts and training operations stretching back to the Suez canal crisis as well as much more recently. RAF Typhoons have been stationed there in recent years to provide security for the base and various Allied assets have moved in and out as well.

Cyprus and the base located there are rich in geography and densely urban in areas which will probably make the addition of the island and the base at its southern tip a challenge. Hopefully Ugra and Eagle Dynamics can find a way to solve this.
