Friday is here and with it the latest 1CGS IL-2: Great Battles developer diary with a focus this time on the Mosquito fighter-bomber variant in development for IL-2: Battle of Normandy. As with other aircraft announcements recently, 1CGS has already detailed that a variety of options are planned to be available including the 57mm Molins guns modification. Plus we get a look at some AAA gun batteries.
Mosquito development underway
We have some great development shots showing off the Mosquito 3D model that’s now in progress. The detailing is impressive and in this case we’re seeing the standard variant with the eight guns but 1CGS has also confirmed that several more modifications will be available.
In the developer diary, Han wrote,
2000 pounds of bombs, four 20mm guns and four 7.69mm MGs the Mosquito carried made him a dangerous adversary for the enemy. In our sim, there will be additional weapon modifications available – eight RP-3 unguided rockets and 57mm anti-tank gun (!).

That is of course always good to hear and ensures that there will be some variety of ways that the aircraft can be flown and used.
Let’s talk about the Mosquito
The famous British twin engine multi-purpose Mosquito has a legend unlike any other in WWII. Designed as a fast bomber using little in the way of strategic materials and being constructed of almost entirely of wood, the Mosquito served in the roles of bomber, reconnaissance, night fighter and fighter-bomber. One of the common variants was the Mosquito Mark FB.VI, the fighter-bomber variant which had a solid nose, four Browning .303 machine guns, four Hispano Mark II 20mm cannons, and the ability to carry up to 2000lbs of bombs or rockets. A variant, the Mk XVIII, replaced the Hispano cannons with a Molins auto-cannon. The 57mm gun was based on the QF 6-pounder anti-tank gun and was primarily used to engage U-Boats and other ships although in a few rare instances it was turned on enemy aircraft and other targets with devastating effect.
Mosquito’s were used in nearly every theatre by the British, Australians, Canadians and even a few found service with the USAAF.
See this video below for a sense of what the type’s abilities were like during anti-ship missions. Hoping to have fly more than a few of these types of missions during the Normandy campaign.
Gunners for the AA vehicles
Development on the two AA vehicles for IL-2: Great Battles is also underway. Although not a slam dunk idea for some, I think this might still be a very interesting way to experience the sim. Check out these 3D models of the gunners.

Just cried again!
I really should stop now. IIRC it will be one of the last, which is understandable but a little sad…

This is the plane I look forward to the most in every sim I have ever played. I just love it, actually watched 633 Squadron again the other day….

I think this is going to be a very popular draw for the people who enjoy twins, attack aircraft, and the Mosquito in general. Can’t wait to try it!

Mosquitos were also flown by 488 (NZ) and 487 (NZ) squadrons, the latter taking part in Operation Jericho along with British and Australian squadrons. Yes, the DH Mosquito is the aircraft I am most looking forward to in Battle of Normandy.

You guys have probably already seen it but in case you haven’t, AvSpecs (who restored the three Mossies flying today, with a fourth underway) reached out to the devs to offer any info needed. Given the user’s name, I assume they’re also doing the same for DCS?

I didn’t see that and that’s incredible. I love to see that kind of thing happening.
