When it was revealed that DCS: Syria was coming out, a lot of pilots asked if we’d be seeing nearby Cyprus and the RAF airbase located there. Initially, this was not part of the plan but the creators of the map, Ugra Media, are stepping an already impressive map up a notch further and are expanding the size of the map. That part we already knew, however, we’re now seeing the first glimpses of what that will look like.
Heading to Cyprus
The expansion of the DCS: Syria map will take the bounds of the map and push them to the west. This does three things. First, it adds more of the Mediterranean sea for carrier battle groups to operate in. Second, it adds more terrain along the southern coast of Turkey. Third, it adds the island of Cyprus and the RAF airbase at Akrotiri.
The expansion of the map requires Urgra media to add more details to the map and it looks, from the screenshots released today, that they are paying particular attention to Cyprus. The island hasn’t just been added as a blank landmass or a low detail area – it’s getting the same attention as the rest of the map.
Those details being added also means adding 18 new airfields which will bring the total of airbases and airfields to 51. Have a look below to see the work being done.
DCS: Syria is rapidly shaping up to be one of DCS World’s best and most versatile maps. With which a wide variety of areas to fly over and the complex geopolitical scenarios that have played out there over the last 70 years (and beyond), this is definitely a tempting map for DCS World pilots. I’m looking forward to seeing more scenarios making full use of the map.
