FlyingIron Simulations is bringing their Spitfire IX to MSFS

Fans of the Spitfire are soon going to have some options as FlyingIron Simulations have announced their Spitfire IX for Microsoft Flight Simulator. The announcement today shows off a relatively complete aircraft and has plenty of details. Here’s what you need to know!

Looks good and should feel good

FlyingIron Simulations has or is developing aircraft for three different simulations now. Their previous work on the Spitfire IX and P-38L for X-Plane 11 were very impressive and the work they have shown off on their first DCS World module, the A-7 Corsair II, looks equally impressive. Their team says that they have brought their expertise forward to the Spitfire IX for Microsoft Flight Simulator as well.

They indicate among their key features that the aircraft will come with Merlin 66 +16lb boost and Merlin 70 (high altitude) +24lb boost options. The cockpit is based on a highly detailed CAD file for the Spitfire IX and their team has brought their experience with sound and systems modeling as much as possible. They do caution that the MSFS SDK is not as far along as what they were able to do with the X-Plane 11 version but that it should still be very good.

They also had quite a bit to say about the flight modeling with FlyingIron Simulations reporting the following:

Asobo has developed an enormously complex, detailed and realistic set of Flight Modelling tools that we have fully implemented to build our Spitfire FM from the ground up. Our experience in developing our Spitfire Mk IX for X-plane 11, as well as our recent experience developing Flight Models inside 3 different simulation platforms, has allowed us to quickly build a highly accurate Flight Model that not only flies ‘by the numbers’, but just feels damn good.

Entering beta testing now

FlyingIron have kept their development details close to the chest as they have already reached the beta testing stage. The testing should last about 2-weeks and then take another 4-7 weeks to get into the Marketplace. Meanwhile, FlyingIron Simulations are preparing to sell and release the module from their website as well.

    A XIV would be more fun. I can’t remember exactly what package it was, either for FS9 or FSX, but it was a family of Spitfire including a model with contra-rotating props. It was good fun.

    This honestly makes my day!

    I don’t have their X-Plane Spit. But I do have their P-38 – and it is outstanding in all regards (and talk about a plane needed in DCS)!

    Will be interesting to see how it compares to the Aeroplane Heaven Spit, as well. Those chaps produce works of art, but FIS kills it in the flight model department, as well.

    So glad to see they’re going the extra mile(s) with MSFS’ deep FM capabilities – will be awesome to see if they can overcome some of the widespread FM annoyances in the current crop of aircraft.

    As an already satisfied customer, this is a Day 1 buy for me.

      Glad to hear that and thanks for the perspective on their P-38 for X-Plane. They seem like capable developers who have pursued a strategy of building up using different sim platforms and now it’s paying off on their newest modules.

      That’s also great on getting a bit of a scoop. I don’t often, especially on the civil aviation sims as they often have whole teams of writers contributing. Stormbirds is a personal project so I write whatever interests me and I try not to compete but exist within the greater whole. Still fun to get a bit of a scoop 🙂
