Eagle Dynamics shows off more of the Marianas islands

Development continues on DCS World’s next free map – DCS: Marianas Islands. The focus of this week’s update is on Tinian, one of the northern islands that used to be home to a major air base during WWII. Let’s have a look at the update!

Detail work continues

Eagle Dynamics reports in their latest DCS World Weekend News update that work continues on the new map and that their team is currently detailing the island of Tinian with urban and airbase assets.

One active and one abandoned field are located on Tinian. North Field was constructed soon after the island’s capture from the Japanese with Ushi Point Airfield being expanded by the Sea Bee’s throughout the rest of the war. By 1945, it was the largest airfield in the world with four parallel 8,000 foot runways and hardstands for 265 B-29 bombers. After the war, the field was abandoned although in recent years two of the runways have been de-weeded and brought up to minimum standard as part of exercises aimed at operating from the field in the event of a ballistic missile attack.

Shown in the latest screenshots are both the abandoned North Field and the modern day Tinian International Airport which ED mentions was used by the USMC including the use of the M-31 aircraft carrier arresting gear systems. Possible future add-on for DCS?

These screenshots accompanied the news post showing off Robert E Kamosa Transmitting Station, Tinian International, North Field, and presumably San Jose village.

    More maps! Good stuff. On one hand it’s too bad there is no free trial on Steam, but then I have all the DCS stuff that interests me. That means we need the clouds and the Mosquito and the new map beaucoup fast. And if the sale ends on the 15th, hopefully we’ll see something offered soon.

    But really there is only one thing: Clouds!

      Clouds will be big and I’m expecting that to ship with the 2.7 point release. A lot of changes on the way.

    This map seems to be unpopular to more than a few folks…

    Once they announced it, i flew over the islands in x-plane and msfs and I found it to be interesting (if un-detailed as is typical with out of the way locales)

    I’m thinking it’s got great potential for a number of scenarios that we can’t really sim on the other maps, like CBG vs CBG battles and such. Plus we KNOW it’s gonna get attention if we ever go hot with China (god forbid…).

    add in the WWII version, F4U Corsair + Essex, etc., and this could be one very entertaining FREE map

    kinda feel the same regarding Falklands/Malvinas – all it takes is a little imagination to have a lot of fun 😉

      I think it has potential and I suspect that the potential may have a lot to do with whatever content they have planned in the longer term. How the community can then make that content into something really interesting to experience, that’ll be something to see!

      I agree, too many people are taking a good thing (free map, NOT desert, and quite different than existing ones) and think of every excuse to crap on it. Same with the Falklands. I’m looking forward to both. If the Caucasus can be used as a substitute map for Vietnam (at least it was when the mod worked) and thousands of other scenarios, I’m pretty sure these new maps will offer a lot more than what is already out there for creative mission makers. Sure, I would much prefer a Vietnam or Korea as a consolation prize, but I’ll gladly take the ones being worked on now.

        As a dedicated Map Slut, I admit to being less then enthusiastic about the Falklands, seems like it might be just a hunk of flat rock(s) with a lot of water around. Hopefully there will be something about it that makes it interesting. If we get a good chunk of Argentina and some mountain action, that would be great.

        RAZBAM has been talking about a big chunk of Agentina being added to the map so your wish may be granted.

        It’s a free map so in my mind the value proposition is – it’s free! It may end up being used more as a training map than not but that’s ok because a lot of training servers and scenarios are based around Caucasus because there’s just nothing else to go on.

        It’s also a good opportunity for DCS World to show off what a modern DCS map looks like to new players and I hope it’s setting the stage for future maps that will use this new technology that they have been developing for the map.
