The start to the second annual Sturmovikfest has been nothing short of incredible. I got a lot of flying in this Sunday checking out most of the events that were happening through the day. Here’s a short recap of some of the events including the mass formation event, the Flying Circus Sunday fly-in, and some of the fun to be had on servers like Finnish Virtual Pilots and Project R racing. Let’s have a look!
Mass formation event
On Sunday we had the first of two mass formation events organized by JimTM. The event took place on a server generously provided to the event by the Red Flight/Combat Box team. We had about 20 attendees join in on the setup with both experienced formation fliers and a few members brand new to multiplayer joining us for the event.
Formation flying in a tight grouping like this is intensely challenging. I lead the first formation and that required a lot of learning and coordination. Then we switched around a few times and I got to experience tight formation flying from a number of different positions. It’s some of the hardest flying I’ve done (and there were definitely some sweaty palms at the end) but it was intensely satisfying.
If that looks like a lot of fun to you, consider signing up for the second mass formation event coming up next Sunday to help us close out the event.
Project R is underway
I signed in not too long after the server had come online and nobody else was there at the time but I am pleased to report that Project R, season 2, air racing is now underway. The server will be open to virtual pilots throughout the week and a sign-up for the race competition coming up at the end of the festival will be coming out soon.
Watch the trailer above to get a sense of the action you can see on this server. I ran through one of the classic courses on my own in a Yak-1B just to check it out. It’s just as fun as I remember it being last year!
I wasn’t able to make it but there was also the TopDog 2v2 dogfight event. If any of you were able to be part of that event, I’d love to hear how it went!
Flying Circus Sunday fly-in
Every Sunday, Flying Circus fans have been taking to the Flugpark server run by Jasta5 to engage in some World War I piloting action. This Sunday we made sure to make the server part of the event schedule and the turn out was incredible with nearly 60 pilots online during the peak of the event.
I managed to get some flying in with Wolfpack345 during the event. This is the second time that we’ve taken to the server in the new Flying Circus Vol 2 Nieuport N.28 and we had a ton of fun with it. Look for my review of that aircraft soon but in the meantime check out these screenshots from the event.
On to Finnish Virtual Pilots
Last year, Sturmovikfest helped to get people to check out the already excellent Finnish Virtual Pilots – Dynamic War server. It’s gone on to become one of the most popular servers in the community and last night was the fly-in for that server as well.
Throughout the day, many of the IL-2 servers were highly populated including the Finnish Virtual Pilots Server, Combat Box, Wings of Liberty and more.
By the evening, things had quieted down a bit but that’s understandable after a full day of flying. I ran a couple of raids on the server in a Pe-2 and an IL-2. My Pe-2 flight was particularly memorable as I dive bombed a Panther tank, dropped bombs on an enemy position and then returned to strafe the Panzer a second time on my way out.
Video recap in the works
I’ve decided that I’m going to try and tackle some cinematic projects over the course of the week. One of those projects will be a kind of video recap of the whole festival. It will include clips from yesterday as well as clips from other events throughout the course of the week. I’m excited to see what materializes through this week. Should be fun!
JanesPlanesAndTrains does a co-op special
Most of Sturmovikfest is focused on the big dogfight multiplayer servers but one YouTube channel, JanesPlanesAndTrains, is doing something different with a special Sturmovikfest co-op series. Check out the first video!
