Gearing up to review a new piece of hardware!

It’s been a while since I did my last hardware review but I have a few reviews that I’d like to do starting off with VIRPIL’s latest throttle – the VPC MongoosT-50CM3 throttle. A review unit just arrived at Stormbirds HQ and here’s a little teaser of what I’m going to be thoroughly testing.

Battle tested

The VPC MongoosT-50CM3 Throttle by VIRPIL is the companies latest throttle for flight and space sim fans. This is the fourth iteration of the throttle and was announced at the end of last year. I previously purchased and reviewed the first generation of the throttle and now I’m checking out the latest model to see what’s changed, what’s improved, how it stacks up and how it fits into the modern flight simmers toolkit.

I’m calling my hardware review series “Battle tested” because I will be taking it into a wide variety of sims and simulation situations. From rainstorms in Microsoft Flight Simulator to the hectic combat situations of DCS World and IL-2: Great Battles.

    Very much looking forward to this review as I am considering getting one, too, to go with my VKB Gladiator NXT!

    I am particularly curious about the rudder “paddles” I seem to see in front.

      The paddles are for the detent system. I’ll have more to say on them soon!

        I’m also looking forward to your review! Can you please check if it’s possible to operate this throttle with the right hand at all? On my current throttle (T16000M FCS) it’s quite easy to reach the side buttons with the pinky and the ring fingers, so I’m wondering if one can do the same with the Mongoose.

        That’s a really interesting question. I will try it that way, however, I suspect it may not be given the position of some of the hat switches. But I will put it to the test!

    Much appreciated. I´m currently on a Thrustmaster TWCS Throttle and am still undecided between the Virpil or the Thrustmaster Warthog Throttle. Looking forward to your test, since I mostly fly IL-2 GB and a little DCS.

    Nice!

    I haven’t seen anything fancy except the Warthog available through Amazon, and it’s pretty expensive. This thing looks sweet.

    I’m very interested in this because the TM Warthog doesn’t have enough HOTAS + sim controls for modern DCS modules. For e.g., operating DCS A-10C leaves you no buttons for Zoom, Modifiers, etc.

    Even on DCS Hornet, which has fewer IRL HOTAS buttons, I end up a bit short…

    For everything else, it works great…but guess which modules I fly the most!?! 😮

    Would appreciate any feedback on that aspect if you would, please 🙂
