Two new JSOW videos for DCS: F-16C

The JSOW is a standoff weapon that is available on a number of American aircraft including the F/A-18C and soon it will be on the DCS: F-16C. A pair of videos from Eagle Dynamics Matt Wagner covers employment of the weapon system and some of the use cases for it.

Stand-off submunitions

The USAF uses only the AGM-154A submunition dispenser variant of the glide bomb. The weapon will reach its target and then release 145 BLU-97/B Combined Effects Bomb (CEB) which will scatter over the target zone.

In the first video, Matt Wagner covers the how-to of using the JSOW on the F-16.

The second video is also very interesting because it covers the way in which the weapon is used. In his example, Matt talks about using the weapon for DEAD (destruction of enemy air defenses). The spread of the submunitions across the targeted area is very useful at knocking out several components of the often spread out SAM sites.

This weapon is likely to come to the F-16 in the next significant update to the DCS World open beta.

    I put off buying the F-16 because I didn’t enjoy it very much during the free trial, but I tried it again and… I bought it. Getting tough to remember all the controls on all the planes but the Viper is good fun.

    Looking forward to the JSOWs.

      Seems par for the course. I’ve even seen one or two say they are never flying it again because they can’t have the C type JSOW. To each is own I suppose!

    There’s some words in how the growth of DCS (starting with KA50 and the A10C) has really shaped the vocal part of the community through the sort of missions / target sets that became popular. I wish I had a dollar for every field of scattered T72s, BMP2s and Tuguskas I’ve attacked on Hoggit, or any other popular server. It seems that, within the online community at least, an Air to Ground jet or helo lives or dies by how many individual armoured vehicles it can plink from standoff height or range. Never mind that the real world historical employment of these aircraft is more often against soft targets.

      I would like to see a greater variety of targets to attack in some servers. Have you tried Syria at War yet? That one sees you attack more soft targets including specific buildings (such as a factory or industrial building) as part of the mission system setup there.

        I have played on SAW, and you are right, the combination of weapon limitations and varied target sets is a very refreshing change from the tank-plinking game that many PVE servers are. That being said, it tends to lag out pretty bad when overstressed.
