Two videos show off the latest work by Team Fusion Simulations

We’ve got a couple of new videos from the folks at Team Fusion Simulations showing off their latest work on the IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover series. The new updates include a massive rework of their cloud technology as well as higher resolution textures. Let’s have a look!

Cliffs of Dover looking better than ever

Keeping up with the latest trends in technology, Team Fusion Simulations is making use of trueSKY technology to incorporate much more sophisticated volumetric clouds. It’s the same technology used in several other games including Ace Combat 7 which had amazing looking clouds well ahead of its time.

There’s also enhancements all over including nice new 4K textures.

The first video is an airfield attack mission that seems to very quickly turn into a classic dogfight in the skies over England.

The second video is a night time raid featuring the Wellington and plenty of flak and searchlights with this raid on Boulogne.

Is this worth getting at this point, Shamrock?

How does it compare to IL-2 in sound, flight and damage modelling?

    Cheers!

Phew, that’s a bunch of big questions there. I’m curious to see what the visual update is able to bring to the table. Some folks really like the look of the sim currently and so this will benefit it quite a bit. I felt like it was among the most dated looking so I’m excited to see what this can do.

Flight model is good but feels a bit behind in places (the transition between ground and air is very…. weird) while the damage mode is very impressive both from a visual and systems perspective. In some ways the damage model exceeds Great Battles.

Keep an eye on it for sure. Team Fusion have poured their heart and soul into this.

I’ll likely take a look in the next Steam sale.

I can only really comment on the damage modelling: it’s more detailed and slightly less forgiving than the Great Battles one. For example in CLOD you can have hydraulic line failure which leads to individual flaps or gear dropping which is not present in GB and less tolerance for various failures means that you don’t have to explode a plane in a spectacular fireball to take it out of the fight. In other details the sound your own guns make from the cockpit are a tad less Hollywood and more convincing to my ears.

As I was typing this I found this recent video highlighting much of the above here, although the video maker does press the attack to show as much damage as possible:

When they have VR I am there. Until then…

I always felt CLoD had better graphics than BoX but I cannot say exactly why. It had a far more sensible approach to engines (you ignore the instruments, you break it, you pay). The damage also seemed more realistic in terms of aircraft being stricken rather than dramatically injured, which I feel happens too often in BoX (please bring back that amazing 3.xx damage model!).

The ammo option I also loved. My favourite for MP in the 109 was the MG full of tracer but none in the cannon. You gave someone the willies with the MG but hit the unsuspecting with the cannon and they had no idea until the rounds connected.

It should have been a great sim…

I’ve been watching this like a hawk for the VR update. I seriously hope it comes soon. I’m a little surprised it’s taken this long. I’ve owned CLoD for years, I can be patient… but these videos definitely get my excitement up.

Do radio commands work now? Or is this something that will always be bricked?

What’s wrong with the radio commands? (It’s been a few patches since I last flew it)
