The latest Microsoft Flight Simulator developer update is out and its a good reminder of some upcoming content that is on the way to the sim. There’s also an updated PDF manual for the An-225 and more so let’s have a look!

Upcoming content

Two big items are coming to Microsoft Flight Simulator in less than a week. Microsoft and Asobo are targeting the release of World Update XIII: Oceania and Expert Series I: ATR-42-600 / 72-600 for next Tuesday.

Oceania, the subject of the next World Update, is a reasonably well worn affair at this point with multiple World Updates bringing significant improvements to areas all over the planet. This time I’m excited to see Hawaii and dozens of other areas around the Oceania area all updated with higher resolution detail.

Recapping what we learned during the last Q&A, World Update XIII will come packed with 140+ points of interest (with 100 in the Oceania area and 40 for Hawaii), 3 research bases, 3 landing challenges, 3 bush trips and 4 discovery flights.

Update (updated April 21, 1:54 pm EDT): The team have tweeted out some images of the upcoming World Update and its various points of interest. A few anyways!

Mriya manual

Famous Flyer IV: Antonov An-225 is a mammoth airplane requiring some expertise to fly it in Microsoft Flight Simulator and so when I hear about manual updates with added detail and explanation I think that this is very good news indeed.

Next live stream

We always learn so much when the MSFS team get together and do a live stream and so it’s worth marking in the calendar when the next one is. That happens to be Wednesday, May 3 at 10:30am PT (1730 UTC).

According to today’s update, the usual panel of Jorg, Seb, and Martial will be there together with some unidentified special guests.

I look forward to it and learning about what might be coming up next!

    Looking forward to it too I guess, but most likely we’ll just get new and still VERY outstanding bugs with this update, hate to whine, but its been the case since the simulation beginning IMHO.

    Was an early Beta tester and gave it my best shot, as were very many.

    Many people suggest Asobo Studio and associated partners should stick to much needed core sim updates before additional scenery content and I agree with that in principal, but its not happening … and at this rate, never will?

    I welcome this world update, really do, love to see how Hawaii looks especially after this update, but and speaking personally … I yearn for a delay in these kinda releases, perhaps take a year out and fix all the very outstanding bugs in the sim, let third party fully take over AI, Traffic, Weather and more … this is not an unreasonable request and it was the de-facto in previous sims from Microsoft whom at the end of the day are in charge of this project.

    Hate to whine when everyone else thinks the sim is wonderful, but thats how I am, telling it as I see it … FS2020 could and should be much core better than this by now .. IMHO … of course 🙂

      I came from X-Plane & Prepar3D. My favorite flight sim is DCS World. I’ve also been using MSFS literally since Day 1. Which is just to say I have at least some perspective on flight sims in general.

      Aside from the rapidly improving flight dynamics, MSFS is unquestionably the best flight simulator that’s ever been released to the public.

      It’s also advanced quickly, not only in terms of “scenery”, but also in terms of the very same “core sim updates” that you’re complaining of…

      Yes, it has bugs, but all the simulators do.

      So far, Asobo have managed to do more in 2+ years than most simulators accomplish 5-10. And they’re pretty good about fixing bugs along the way.

      And they’re doing something right because what I see is the other simulation developers, who had become quite lazy about development, all of the sudden up their games in every regard.

      Given all that, I’m quite happy to let Asobo continue on the path they’ve set – they’ve improved the entire genre like literally no other dev team has.

    Well, there we have it, Urgent Siesta loves the sim and several others, so it must be great 🙂

    All other opinions are invalidated ?

    He’s entitled to his opinion of course, but IMHO, MS FS2020 is still one massive bug fest and is far from perfect.

    Urgent Siesta. I came from the very beginning of Flight simulation … almost, from FS2 and I joke you not, then my first PC was FS4 and have owned and used every version since.

    Yes its been a great uphill battle, also you are not the only one coming with prior experience of DCS, X-Plane and so on and so forth. You are entitled to your opinion, of course you are my friend, but you come across as the authority on this and that’s wrong.

    I disagree with your assessment on MS 2020 status quo completely, its far less than perfect just now and the mistakes the teams make each upgrade just introduce more and more bugs, this is common knowledge and fact … and I wish it were not so.

    This is the harsh reality for those prepared to face honest journalism and truth.

    Just take a look at the known bug list and long, long list of fixes acknowledged and needed on Asobo’s own site my friend, because it seems you have missed all of it.

      I’m going to dip my toe in here…

      First, let’s try and keep the personal stuff out of this. I think Urgent Siesta’s reply was well written and I don’t think he attacked you or your character in any way so let’s keep the temperature here at a nice lukewarm level. None of us are the arbiters of anything.

      Both of you make some good points about Microsoft Flight Simulator. It has bugs, it has its issues, I spent a good several months fighting with stability issues. That said it has come a long way and while there are still things to do it is certainly one of the greats. The sim to beat in my mind!

      Being a fan of many sims inside and outside of the genre and of video games in general I can safely say that not a single one of them does not get away without some sometimes serious bugs. None of them are ever going to solve them all. And none of them are going to pause development to solve them.

      Maybe if AI take over and self-fixing software becomes a thing. I say that partly in jest… though that reality may not be too far away!

        Never meant to be personal, if thats how it come across, however I did take Urgent Siesta’s comments personally as it goes completely against the grain in all my experience of FS2020 so far.

        Its great folk promote the sim to the hilt, but with the best will in the world, there are two sides to every story.

        As good as FS2020 is and as welcome as it is too, it still leaves a lot to be desired in many area’s.

        I love your blog Shamrock, check on it every day, but isn’t it about time we were more critical on the less than perfect things in all aspects of modern Flight Simulation these days too … please?

        I think its OK to be critical of products and you to your credit, you have I must admit, but as regards FS2020 and lots of broken aspects of it ,,, I felt compelled to reply to Urgent Siesta and his statement.

        There is an awful lot wrong with MS FS2020 that still needs some basic (back to basics) core fixing and sometimes it pains me when I see more new eye candy scenery in favour of much needed core Simulation fixes.

        It is with interest I watch the development of A2A’s Comanche GA Aircraft, it cant be that far away now, apparently this aircraft’s dynamics will work outside of FS2020’s flight model and do its own thing … A2A have a good reputation and if they pull this off, we could finally start to see MS FS2020 turn a new corner.

        Thanks for being a reader! I appreciate the regular viewing and reading!

        I do try to be critical where I feel it to be necessary. I have written about some of MSFS’ problems over the years. Recently I’ve had a great time of it and had few to no troubles but of course if something big and newsworthy comes along I’ll definitely report on it.

        Looking forward to seeing what A2A end up doing!

      Haven’t heard anything since the last update from PMDG’s CEO. Hopefully news about that and the long (long!) awaited EFB.
