A couple of airliner related videos came out this morning with the folks at TFDi talking in detail about their MD-11 project for Microsoft Flight Simulator. Meanwhile Digital Flight Dynamics, a freeware group, also broke a year long silence and provided a significant update on their A350X freeware project.

TFDi’s MD-11

Well known for their FSX and P3D aircraft, TFDi have provided a new June 2023 development update on their MD-11 for Microsoft Flight Simulator. The video shows off the work that the team have been doing with the systems and cockpit to ensure high fidelity. That includes detailed electrical systems and failures.

On the website, TFDi have a detailed breakdown of what the team are doing and what is remaining in their development cycle. They currently list the project at 67.25% ready for flight and expect the next phase of development to be reached by July 31st of this year.

A pre-order price of $80 USD is listed although its not yet available for that with a note that the project will be coming later this year.

The A350X freeware

Meanwhile, developer Digital Flight Dynamics, have long ago announced an Airbus A350 project coming as a freeware project. Their last developer video was released about a year ago and so this third episode comes a little out of the blue with a host of updates on the cockpit, passenger area, and exterior model. There’s also a complete segment talking about avionics with ECAM, MCDU, EFB and other sections touched on.

The team is a freeware group and are looking for applications. They are always looking for more people with knowledge of the A350 or experience creating similar projects to join.

I’m just not in the market for >$80 airliners. There – I said it.

Fenix and Just Flight, and somewhat similarly, PMDG, have kinda set the right value prop even if they do it in different ways.

OTOH, if it’s a High Fidelity Hercules or C-17, with a great FM, sign me right up!
(part of the reason I still enjoy JFs BAe 146)

It’s a big price and the MSFS market volume seems to show that a slightly lower price can make for better sales – at least that’s what we’ve heard from some developers.

We’ll have to see how well it does in the market!

  2. Ah, the MD-11. Hated by crews and maintenance alike. I wonder if they’ll simulate its propensity for porpoising before it crashes and explodes.

The MD-11 was just like the Scud missile. It could get airborne, but you never knew where it was going to land…

MD-11 definitely had a bunch of very serious problems and crashes. That video is a brutal example.

On the other hand, it has had a pretty good run in freighter operators. FedEx isn’t going to retire theirs until 2028.
