Stealthy plane, not so stealthy liveries are the things that jumped out at me was I was reading about a new aircraft release done in partnership between developer KwikFlight and iniBuilds. This release is a recreation of the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber and its a bit… flamboyant? For a stealth bomber at least. I couldn’t resist not writing something about this. Let’s have a look!

The Spirit of the thing

iniBuilds have announced a new partnership and a new addition to their growing online store today with Kwikflight joining the mix of products available. Their just announced Spirit for Microsoft Flight Simulator is a B-2 stealth bomber… although the liveries are anything but.

The message, posted to the iniBuilds forum, appears to suggest that KiwkFlight are more about having fun with the sim than in-depth modeling. I can’t fault them for that but they’ve certainly chosen an interesting airplane to dress up in some truly interesting and slightly over the top schemes. The hardcore military simmer in me struggles with the setup while the fun loving flight simmer in me thinks this might just hit the spot for some flight simmers.

Here’s what they had to say:

At Kwikflight, we are all about fun, interactive experiences, and we thought long and hard about what unique aircraft we could make as our first product that customers could enjoy on their own, but also with their friends; and the Kwikflight Spirit was born!

Features, pricing, interest?

Among the features are a functioning FMS with GPS, VOR and TACAN support, 6 independent Multi Function Display (MFD) screens and Engine Function Display (EFD), autopilot functionality, an animated air to air refuelling point, and stealth mode which inhibits the full travel of some control surfaces to improve stealthiness.

It also appears to have a detailed exterior model and several liveries.

The cockpit seems passable as well and we know at least a few “fun oriented” projects out there don’t have a cockpit so its good to see that this at least has something here. It actually looks reasonably close, to a point, with the available photos of the B-2’s cockpit.

As far as military aircraft go in Microsoft Flight Simulator, we seem to have a wide range of a few extremely authentic high quality options, several that sit in the middle of the range, and then some very cheap feeling options that aren’t worth your time. This one looks like it fits in the middle of the range with a low price, fun oriented liveries, and a mix of basic systems. I wouldn’t know for sure without a review of course.

I’m not sure how big the market is for this sort of thing but maybe there are plenty of folks who would love to fly this. Let me know in the comments if you’re one of them!

If this all sounds like something that you’d like to fly in your copy of Microsoft Flight Simulator, this aircraft is available for £13.99 GBP from the iniBuilds webstore.

  1. It seems ridiculous 🙄

  2. Would have been fun to have a flying wing that uses fly by wire. I don’t mind military aircrafts in a civilian sim.
Flying anything can be fun as long as there is challenge and realism.
Too bad this addon focuses on Fortnite Liveries, in a simulator that already does not care a lot about good flight dynamics.

It’s not exactly my cup of tea either but it did catch my eye with the …. Odd liveries for a B-2. I’m not exactly sure what they are going for here.

      1. It also has a realistic livery, the gray that all B-2s wear. My theory is that if they just put that livery with the airplane people would complain about the lack of liveries…. So they had to come up with something a little quirky.

It’s odd to me that it doesn’t feature in the marketing. The whole thing is a bit of a head scratcher. On the other side of the coin, it caught my attention.

      3. They lost me at, “Ninja of the Sky” 😉

It has its place, and for $20 I don’t expect a High Fidelity add-on, but the main Red Flag for me is that out of a 135 second trailer only about 5 seconds is spent on the cockpit. Everything else is cheeseball liveries…

OTOH, with a little digging, the cockpit is passably modeled from a 3D perspective and the external model looks at least decent.
If it’s as good as one of the Defaults, then I’d consider it, but the marketing aimed at 13 year olds has REALLY put me off…

    2. But how do you simulate an aircraft whose systems are classified? Also, how do you simulate an aircraft’s onboard systems (ACor) that are classified and without which, would plow into the ground. The control surfaces on that bird, which are controlled by the (ACor) computer system, move up to a 100 degrees per second. Good luck simulating any of that even remotely.

      1. The combat specific systems are the classified ones. Low Observables, Electronic Warfare, comms, targeting, weps, sensors, etc. None of which is necessary for MSFS/X-Plane & the like. And many of those are plausibly simulated in other flight sim addons (notably DCS World).

Other than that, it’ll be pretty much like any other 20-ish year old airliner with a semi-glass cockpit. FMC/FMS with ICAO, GPS, INS, ILS, autopilot, weather radar, etc. Given its missions, it probably doesn’t even have VNAV, etc. (oh the HORROR!)

Really not a stretch by any means.

I’m convinced that it’s possible to have a good experience by offering up the 20-year old airliner systems in this jet. The classified stuff has far less bearing on MSFS for sure.

That’s good to hear. I’m not opposed to what they’ve done either but I was a bit surprised at how prominently it featured into the marketing – the message they are sending is curious to me and I haven’t quite figured it out yet.

For those who do get this, the livery pack of realistic USAF marked ones seems like a good idea. I don’t know why it wasn’t more a part of the initial offering.

  4. Initially I had more interest in this than the 117, but seeing the liveries and rather limited functionality (not necessarily the devs fault) has turned into a pass. I’m guessing the B2 would be herculean effort to get into DCS instead given the classified info/flight controls complexity, but at least would be more at home there.

Don’t really mind the mil stuff in MSFS either, but seems better suited towards air show/demo config type stuff or warbirds than firing rounds or having full systems fidelity. Can’t think of much use for essentially turned-into an awkward cargo plane with fictional liveries (for the most part).

  5. I like it!

I am no hardcore. I have more of an e-sports approach to combat flight sims.

but what bothers me more, than fancy liveries, is the mediocre modeling. like eg DC Designs.

    1. Thanks for the comment NEVO! I’m pleased to hear that this is hitting the mark for some folks too. I know some of my readers would be horrified at it but others might enjoy something like this.

I’ve kept tabs on DC Designs military aircraft from time to time and not yet felt enthused. I still hope to see them improve.
