Matt Wagner is back with another DCS World video. This one is yet again focused on datalink capabilities but this time is for the DCS: AH-64D. Let’s have a look!

Setting up the AH-64 for networked operations

The first of a couple of anticipated videos, this video from Matt Wagner is all about setting up the datalink on the DCS: AH-64D. That includes a comprehensive look at the mission builder as well as at the setup on the helicopter itself. If you want to know how to configure it this video is going to be essential.

Matt reports that follow-up video(s) will cover how to use the system in practical application. Passing messages and sharing information between helicopters should be, like in datalink enabled jets, a helpful force multiplier in some situations. Matt also reports that this system is not the same one that the F-16 and F/A-18 use – although more recent updates of the AH-64D and E do now have that integration.

Look for more videos soon!

  1. Such a good looking module, and I’m a bit jealous of those who have mastered it. I’ve seen videos of people going pro in it and it looks awesome. But it’s just beyond my brain cells. I’m staying with my beloved Ka-50.

I hear you! I’ve kind of hit a block where it’s hard to keep all of these systems across all of these jets and helicopters straight. Some of it stays and sticks and other memories seem very perishable. I’d love to spend dedicated time on the AH-64 sometime but not right now.

    2. Yeah, I’m kinda the same. I have about the cheapest usable HOTAS (T-16000) and it takes me a while to assign keys and stuff on most digital FBW type aircraft, what with juggling shift buttons etc. With the Apache, it’s a little overwhelming as it has so many options, so many joysticks, hats etc. I’ve just about managed to work out a schema for the A-10c, which is another one with a lot of options. With the F-16, A/V-8B and F/A-18 I’ve got a pretty good setup and learned most things well enough but they are a slightly simpler than the Apache. I’ll get around to it eventually, but I think this is one module I’m gonna have to read Chuck’s guide before starting my setup, rather than as I go along 😀
And yes, I’m rather fond of the Blackshark as it’s relatively agricultural nature is an asset with my more limited setup.

      1. “The agricultural nature of the Blackshark”. That’s a fantastic line. 🙂

I had a T-16000 HOTAS before and really liked it. I still use the TWCS throttle along with my new one. But here’s the thing – do you use Voice Attack? If you don’t, you must. I couldn’t/wouldn’t fly without it.

  2. Whoopty doo. Where’s the dynamic campaign and the AI improvements that we’ve been waiting for for multiple years now? Yah, I own all the helicopters.

And I suspect we’ll be waiting for more years to come. They have a long list of fundamentals that need to be brought forward before we get there. It’s been a long wait… I hear you in that.

      1. For us older folks it surely sounds very reassuring to hear that we have to wait for “more years to come”.

Reassuring it’s not. I’m sure! I’m also not privy to or in charge of their project schedule either. I can do my best to relay and interpret what we’ve heard and I suspect that it’s going to be a while yet. Multi threading support and the air to air BVR and WVR AI updates are some of the stepping stones. But they’ve got many more stones to hop yet.

Maybe it’ll go faster than I think. Fingers crossed!

      3. You’re surely not the one to blame. 😃 And perhaps you’re right – maybe it’ll go faster after all. I for my part keep trying to maintain a positive attitude.

I always try and keep a positive attitude while thinking realistically on all of this. There’s likely to be some more stepping stones on the path with 2.9 on the way and 3.0 mentioned. A big point release like 3.0 will hopefully bring more into focus.
