It’s been a tumultuous couple of weeks for the IL-2 series with the announcement of a new Team Fusion Cliffs of Dover DLC, a controversy that swept the community, ongoing documentary releases, there’s word on when we’ll hear about the next title in the IL-2 series, and yesterday we saw our first images of the La-5F Series 38. There was also talk about the next couple of Flying Circus aircraft. Let’s have a look and talk about it all.

Elephant in the room

It’d be difficult to do another news story about IL-2 without talking about the elephant in the room. I fear this may open fresh wounds but I don’t think I could go on without saying something.

Last week’s controversy surrounding the IL-2 X/Twitter account posting and liking political content and the subsequent apology has not sat particularly well in many corners and the apology fell somewhat short of what was needed to quell concerns.

While the immediate firestorm is over, I know there’s still a lot of dissatisfaction out there and my sense is that recent events have brought long simmering frustrations on bigger issues into clearer focus. I don’t think that the X/Twitter incident is the only driver behind this and the lasting effects of what has happened will only become clear months and years down the road.

To get a sense of it, I am going to run my first ever poll on Stormbirds and see how this goes. I also expect many of you will want to weigh in via the comments and I welcome it – but lets keep it on topic. Meanwhile, vote below.

Update on the future of the series to come

A lot of you and I have been wondering just when we may see a reveal of where the series is going. Indeed many of you have expressed concerns in the comments on this for quite some time.

What was said this week is that it will likely be spring of 2024 when they will feel confident about their next product. Read Han’s comment on the forum to see what is being said.

La-5F screenshots and commentary

We have new screenshots of the La-5F (Series 38) as well as new information about this Collector Plane. The La-5F (Series 38) joins the La-5 (Series 8) and the La-5FN (Series 1) as a new Collector Plane for the series.

The developer update makes the case that the upgraded artwork and performance advantages may pique interest. Indeed the cockpit visuals are better than the original La-5 that we have, though I note that the La-5FN also has a good cockpit.

This La-5F, although of lesser performance than the La-5FN, appears to be a slightly more modern variant. This version notably has a canopy jettison system which the La-5 and La-5FN as presented in the sim did not. No word on if that has any practical gameplay aspects such as ease of bailing out in some situations.

According to the update, the La-5F will turn better than the La-5FN, be more agile than the La-5 have the same field of view as the La-5FN, and posses slightly lower top speed and climb performance relative to the FN. Trade-offs rather than a linear increase in performance between variants does make for a slightly more interesting experience.

I would like to know how available the La-5F is in the Kuban campaign as the La-5FN’s limited appearance in the closing weeks of that campaign is one of its few drawbacks. If the La-5F is available for more of the campaign, it may end up being either a better buy in the first place or a more compelling experience for some single player pilots. And again, I expect that some will give it a pass too.

Flying Circus Vol 3 updates

Work continues on Flying Circus Vol 3 with two more aircraft entering into the beta testing stage. The Hanriot HD.1 and Nieuport 17 GBR (British) are next in line with these Rise of Flight veterans being upgraded to Flying Circus standard.

The Nieuport 17 GBR comes equipped with British gear as the type was commonly flown by several British squadrons. Arguably, this is a rehash of the Nieuport 17 that we already have. My familiarity with how Rise of Flight managed to sell the differences between the two variants is low so I am curious to see how these two will sit alongside each other.

The Hanriot HD.1 meanwhile brings in an interesting French type that was rejected for service but flew with relative distinction with Belgian Army Aviation. Not particularly fast, it was considered highly agile and a safe airplane to fly.

Other updates

A few other updates are coming. Patch 5.107 is on the way and it will also be bringing improvements to career mode. New mission types as well as the reduction in Luftwaffe presence for both Normandy and Rhineland missions to better reflect the reality of the war at that point.

The third episode of the IL-2 Sturmovik: Series Games documentary is now out.

You can read about all of the latest developer updates in the developer update right here.

  1. It seems that there’s a large element of ‘treading water’ at the moment. Personally I find this a little sad but I find personal enthusiasm for the project as it stands to be metaphorically disappearing in my rear-view mirror. This is a real shame as I have had a great deal of affection for all it’s done over the years but it all seems to have come to a sort of faltering tick-over in a dusty layby of late…
It would be gre4at to get the inner smile back into the whole thing but I don’t see any blinding evidence as yet and that makes me a little sad.

I can understand that feel for sure. Things change and nothing is forever – even a feeling. Sometimes things can be reinvigorated too!

  3. IL2 needs a solid kick in the complacency. More of the same is not enough. IL2 is wondering if people are still interested while DCS has people screaming “Take my money!” And it’s shame IL2 is like this because it’s a classic sim. But it really needs a push in the right direction.

It does need to evolve. Do you think that a new series as has been hinted and speculated about will do the trick?

      1. They need to make it a bit more of sandbox, bring in new planes just for the fun of it, and for the love of god, make an in-game user friendly mission editor. Such a great sim but it always felt like it was wrapped too tight.

  4. It doesn’t bother me in the least that the next major release has not been revealed. When they are ready they will reveal it. The way some are agonizing and becoming so upset about this eludes me – it is bizarre. As respects the issue on Twitter that is surely an embarrassment to the devs. More then likely some over zealous employie made a foolish mistake and hopefully was fired. They did apologize so this issue is over for me.

Certainly logical that we may not know full details about a next gen effort until its actually arrived. Do you think they need to be a bit more explicit on the broad strokes? Some folks are still assuming another Great Battles title is coming while others, myself included, have read all of the messaging and think that its a break from the current series. I’m struggling to come up with a way for it to be both.

      1. It would be nice if they provided more information but that is up to them to make that decision. How they choose to communicate regarding a future product does not impact my enjoyment of the current product. Afterall I paid for the current product and becoming angry about lack of communication about the future release so therefore not enjoying the current product is a form of self punishment. That is why I describe it as bizarre behavour. By the way I really enjoy the work you are doing with this site – Thanks!!

  5. The political part I can ignore ‘cos idiots gonna idiot and I doubt it really reflected anything very deep. That being said, i cannot bring myself to fly the VVS aircraft at the moment and hope that a lot of the Russian nation ***** in ***** for what they have done.

But what a way continually to shoot themselves in the foot. It’s like the team have a death-wish. Open goal missed on a daily basis. It is a wholly different mindset and whatever the team think they are doing it is not working. But they refuse to accept this.

I know it is a cliche, but that is very Russian and it is currently not going very well for their country at large. But in Russia it is always everyone else’s fault.

    2. This is a rather childish way to look at it. By that logic, I should not be flying a US aircraft in DCS for all the crimes and senseless wars they have been involved in the past decades.

Wait, even worse I shouldn’t be flying WWII Era Mustangs either!

I keep forgetting that western countries are the unequivocal “good guys” and there is not moral equvalence, silly me.

That being said, il2 rep shouldn’t have made political statements and politics don’t belong in games, period.

This cancel culture and nationalistic chest beating on both sides is getting annoying. IL2 devs are Russian, of course they are going to be patriotic toward Russia and their military, did you expect anything else?

      1. yes – i do expect something more from the il2 devs. i expect them to stop the constant gaslighting, lying, and silencing over an incident which they themselves created.

  6. I’ve refused to buy any 1C or any other Russian products since Feb 2022, as I have no wish to fund Putin’s war. It’s much too close to home for us Europeans. I still fly Il-2 (but not as much as before) as I don’t see why I should abandon something that I already paid for. The supposed new title doesn’t interest me at all – it will either be more of the same, or maybe Korea… It’s got to have a Russian element in it as that will be their biggest market share from now on, and it will have to show the Russian military in a good light. So no Khalkin Gol, no Winter War, no Barbarossa. I will have to hope that Combat Pilot comes to fruition and that I live long enough to see it; I’m getting on a bit now.

That’s fair. A number of folks have made purchasing decisions about the series in the wake of the invasion. And you’re right too that there’s no reason to abandon something you already have.

  7. Their communication with the community was atrocious before “the incident” and now them trying to sweep what happened under the rug and gaslight their already small customer base… I have absolutely no desire or plans to purchase anything else from these clowns for the foreseeable future.

    1. Some folks are certainly saying the same thing as you. It’s why I think “the incident” laid bare some simmering complaints that have been floating around for a while.

Are you thinking about spending more time with a different flight sim?

      Like

      1. Yeah, gonna be investing more time and money into DCS and MSFS. Microprose is also aiming to have the first Mighty Eighth Redux release in EA before the end of the year too and while not a true sim, it’ll be something else to do. I’m also hoping Combat Pilot hopefully will become a thing although realistically it’ll be years before we can put our hands on it.

I’ll still continue to enjoy the GB products I’ve already bought, just won’t be investing in anything new, including the “new project” until I see some real changes… which unfortunately I’m not expecting

  8. I have people who work for me who occasionally make utterly inexplicable, boneheaded pronouncements/mistakes. And it casts my entire team in a bad light.

So I’m willing to give the IL2 team the benefit of the doubt even while I SMH in disbelief at their carelessness/lack of oversight of their public comms team.

The resulting boycotting of the product is so immaterial to reality as to be nothing more than Virtue Signaling. As though that will ever have an iota of effect on the course of events…!

I mean, if you weren’t boycotting since RU re-annexed Crimea in 2014 (10 YEARS ago), or for the younglings, at least for the last 2 YEARS since the (latest) invasion, then you’re entirely unserious.

For me, it’s a video game. Entertainment. And since I realize my continued enjoyment and ongoing purchases will have exactly zero effect on world events (ESPECIALLY in light of the actually material effect of the international financial sanctions on the RU govt itself), I’m gonna keep on enjoying myself despite the blunder of one of IL2s employees.

Accusing people of being “unserious” for not boycotting IL2 back when Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 is a false equivalence. While a lot of people are understandably unhappy with this and other Russian actions, I don’t think anyone blames the IL2 team for what Russia did (and is still doing).

That is, until their recently appointed community manager started liking, following, and sharing pro-Russia propaganda in addition to homophobic, anti-vax, and xenophobic far-right garbage using the official IL2 social media accounts. Honestly, even that could be forgiven if 1CGS owned up to it, fired LukeFF, and denounced that kind of dangerous rhetoric. Instead they took their typical path which is to gaslight and silence any and all people who speak the truth of what happened.

That is why people are mad. Not because of what Russia has done, but because the culture of 1CGS appears to be in lock-step with all that is wrong with Russian culture.
