Heatblur know how to put on a presentation and this new Phantoms Phorever trailer that just released remind us just how good they are at showing us, telling us, and delivering on extremely detailed simulation experiences. The pre-order is now live, the trailer is out, and we know quite a bit more about DCS: F-4E than we did yesterday. Let’s talk Phantom!

Ghostly reveal!

The trailer is out now!

DCS: F-4E has been on many a wishlist for a long time now and its finally coming this winter. Heatblur have given us a window of late 2023 through to March 2024 for when their new module will release.

The first part of the trailer was a cinematic feast showing off all of the visual spectacle and fast pasted action that you expect from a DCS World trailer. And Heatblur are among the best at this! Today they remind us of that!

Set to a House of the Rising Sun cover by Audiomachine, the trailer shows the F-4 fighting MiG-21s, dodging flak bursts, dropping high drag bombs, launching missiles, skimming the waves and generally doing all of the things you’d expect a Phantom to do. Once that high octane presentation was over, the trailer switched gears and gave us some great information on what Heatblur are doing with the F-4E. Heatblur look to be set to establish a new standard for DCS World yet again. Here’s how.

The details of the module

The narration reveals that Heatblur are modeling the aircraft’s physical nature both visually and at a simulation level. They encouraged us to count the rivets because they are all accurately placed. Pilot models will, for the first time in DCS, be customizable with a choice of features including helmet, body, equipment and gloves. They also joke about getting the essential details right – like the pilot’s moustache. Nice!

New weapons GBU-8 and AGM-12 are coming while the AGM-45 Shrike, already in DCS World, is being upgraded.

Simulated depth include physical simulations of the APQ-120 radar and an entirely new EW simulation.

They are also doing electrical and fluid simulation which will give the F-4 Phantom an even more organic feel to it. Reliability factors may mean that a light-bulb may be dimmer than the ones around it, a landing gear door may stick and take longer to come down. Thousands of individual components are simulated.

Jester AI 2.0 brings in a whole bunch of new features by asking questions proactively and being more interactive. The new Jester AI also will be externally scriptable meaning that the community can add their own segments into the Jester programming. Mission makers will be able to bring more of Jester into their campaigns and missions.

A sequence during the presentation has Jester expressing concern about low flying and the pilot being able to reply with one of what appears to be four different responses. No more Jester punching out unexpectedly? That sounds good.

Finally, DCS: F-4E is coming with a detailed interactive manual. For the first time, Heatblur are making that manual available from within the module. Hold the right key combo and click on any button in the cockpit and you’ll be taking to the segment of the manual detailing that button. Nice! Training missions and videos are also planned!

Pre-order starts now

Keeping in mind that Heatblur are expecting to launch the DCS: F-4E Phantom sometime in the winter, either late 2023 or up to March 2024, pre-orders are available now. Regular pricing is set at $79.99 USD but currently features a $20 USD pre-order discount. Addition packages add two licenses (one for you, one for your buddy), t-shirts, and limited edition Meteor music albums for the F-4 and F-14.

This is all available now through the Heatblur webstore. Pre-order will soon begin on the Eagle Dynamics e-Store and on Steam as well.

Phew… that’s a lot to take in but here we are. Phantom is finally closing in on launch and it sounds incredible!

  1. Okay, that was a ******* cool trailer! 🙂

As stated, I’ve never been a big Phantom fan, but this thing is just pure high-tech flightsim goodness and it’s impossible not to have it. The eye-candy is outrageous. Day One purchase. Definitely looks like the bar has just been raised big time.

It does! Quite remarkable project for any flight sim!

  2. Interesting thing I caught, at 9:27 they say they want jester to better if your flying the F-14, A-6 or F-4. I didn’t think the A-6 was planned to be a flyable module.

Oh yes, the A-6 was announced long ago as a future module. The order is F-4, Eurofighter Typhoon and then A-6. So we’re a few years away still. But it is coming!

    2. A-6 has been announced as flyable for quite awhile, with the AI “releasing” first.

Now, as to when it will by flyable by US…? I think it’s gonna be awhile, like after F-4 is settled in and Typhoon launches, too (sadly).

  3. Bar = Raised. Once again.

I can’t see it replacing Tomcat or Hornet for me, but it’s definitely getting time from me ASAP.

Bravo and Kudos to HB for a spectacular launch video, along with all the new features!

  4. I am going to preorder it on the Eagle Dynamics Website

    1. I have to wait for Steam, that’s where my money is. I wonder if they’ll still have the “crew” option.

      1. Not sure if they will. F-14 had a similar option as I recall and it wasn’t available on the other storefronts.

  5. I am stoked!

I was looking forward to this module like I was for the Tomcat. But this reveal has me so excited and giddy… The same feeling I had when the ex was pregnant… this wholesome emotion that something extraordinary will enrich my life soon..

I got the crew package.. Like I did for the -14.. ( twice )

  6. Hot damn!

Pre-ordered. Anyone out there, I would like an IDF 107 Squadron skin and USN VF-96 (yes, I know they were not flying E models…).

Somehow this excites me more than some of the more modern kit.

    1. While we’re living in hope and requesting skins, I’d love the RAAF skin for the year or two the F4 was in Australian service while they ironed out the bugs in the wing pivot on the F1-11. I remember the Phantoms flying over my house as a kid, I lived near Amberley Air Base, and I don’t know if this is true (I was about 9 at the time) it seemed like the whole country was excited to be getting the F1-11s but I loved the look of the Phantoms. Apparently the pilots would have loved to keep the F4s but they just weren’t what the country was looking for at the time. They were one of the main reasons I wanted to be a military pilot. Not that I didn’t love the Aardvarks, of course! Unfortunately, myopia meant this was a non starter in those days, before laser surgery, so that dream died when I was prescribed specs at the age of 12… 😀

      1. My uncle flew Vampires in the RAAF and my father was set to fly them in the reserves and at the last minute they disbanded the squadron! Was Laverton or Point Cook, I now cannot recall. We are all from Melbourne.

I forgot they had F-4s. Seems like almost everyone liked them. Frankly, to replace those and the ‘Pigs’ an F-15 fleet should have been bought. The F-35A is a disastrous decision. Did someone forget to measure the Pacific? At least get the C model but F-15EXs would be a much betted decision than LM’s over-hyped PoS.

Should anyone wants a Phantom good warm-up, can I recommend (may have done this before) “One Day In A Very Long War”. It’s free on Kindle and a phantastic (sorry) read.

  7. Confused – will it be available for preorder in the DCS shop as normal with the discount?

We don’t for sure know that it will have the same discount but seeing as other recent releases have gone this way I’d guess yes. It’ll definitely be on Steam and on the e-Shop soon.

  8. Just as exciting is the API tech behind this. We are going to massive benefits to any new module development (hopefully faster dev cycles).

    1. I hope that’s true but I doubt it. Between development times as they are, the amount of stuff announced, and EDs tendency to release modules several months apart, I think we’re pushing 2027 at least with what’s already announced. That’s a loooong time. 😦

It is already up! Pre-order today if you wanted to just remember that we’ll probably be waiting for a few more months. They’ve given us a window of December of this year to March of next year and I suspect that it’ll be closer to March than December. https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/shop/modules/phantom/

  11. I’ll wait on the pre order simply because they say winter 2023-24 then say as late as March which would be spring 24 so covering two seasons so far

    1. I’m guessing Heatblur is writing winter by astronomical season (ends March 21) rather than meteorological season (ends Feb 28/29).
