Rounding up the end of the week news from across the community with a variety of DCS World news items. We’ve got a new video from Matt Wagner talking about some of the details behind the DCS: AH-64D’s Fire Control Radar (FCR) and showing off some capabilities. There’s also new update from Baltic Dragon on the Kola map Arctic Thunder campaigns, some teases of what may be ahead for DCS: MiG-23MLA, a dev update from Eagle Dynamics on the Kh-29 missile series, a reminder on sales and more. Let’s go!

Identifying targets with the Apache’s FCR

Modeling the AH-64D Apache Longbow variant ensured that we’d eventually have access to a pretty impressive fire control radar. The feature has taken a while to come to the module but if Matt Wagner’s first video on the subject is any indication, this will be quite the capability upgrade for the already impressive DCS: AH-64D.

Matt talks about some of the technical aspects of the radar in the initial part of the video and then gives us a brief demo of what it can do in the later half. The radar and its associated systems can paint over a target area and identify targets based on type and threat with up to 128 targets identified and 16 targets displayed at any one time. Matt shows us what this can do at the end of the video by launching Hellfire missiles one after the other at targets.

Baltic Dragon update

Always great to hear from Baltic Dragon on the latest projects underway and this latest update posted to both Twitter/X and Facebook is all about the Arctic Thunder campaigns. The paired campaigns are a joint effort between Baltic Dragon and Reflected Simulations with players flying either the F/A-18C Hornet as a Finnish fighter pilot or in the F-16C as a USAF pilot.

According to the report, the skeletons of all missions are setup, scripts are almost finalized, and the map itself, under development by Orbx, is also coming along nicely.

We are very happy with the missions so far, we came up with an interesting storyline, and you’ll be able to play through it from 2 different perspectives: as a Finnish Hornet pilot (in my campaign), or a USAF Viper pilot (in Reflected’s). The 2 storylines sometimes intersect, overlap, or just simply affect each other. We can’t wait to show it to you!

Baltic Dragon on Facebook

Sounds really exciting and even a bit unique with the overlapping nature of the project created by two of DCS World’s highly acclaimed and prolific campaign makers.

MiG-23MLA in 2024? Maybe!

RAZBAM CEO Ron Zambrano loves to tease us on Twitter/X about the various projects that are underway at RAZBAM and it looks like the word for 2024 is that it will be the year of the MiG-23. Here’s the post in question:

The MiG-23MLA project for DCS World has been in development for quite some time with the lead on the project being the same responsible for RAZBAM’s MiG-19. A series of challenges have caused the project to proceed slowly but things appear to be speeding up and this latest image gives us a look at the type’s complex landing gear nicely integrated into the fuselage and the rest of the aircraft.

If the MiG-23 does come to us in 2024 I would expect it will be late in the year so don’t expect an imminent release.

Eagle Dynamics development report on the Kh-29

The Russian X-29, NATO AS-14 ‘Kedge’ or 9M721 is a Soviet era air-to-surface missile with a large 320 kg warhead and a variety of sensor types including laser, IR, radar and TV. For those more familiar with Western weapons, its similar in basic concept to the AGM-65 Maverick missile though it is much larger.

This is the focus of this week’s development report. Eagle Dynamics has reviewed the weapon and reworked the aerodynamic characteristics as well as the seeker model to better reflect real world considerations. The update also mentions upgrades to the 3D model with modeling of actuators, animation of fins, and seeker movements.

The report also says that similar work is being undertaken for the smaller but similar X-25/Kh-25/AS-10 NATO reporting name “Karen.” Read the report here!

DCS autumn sale wrapping up

Eagle Dynamics have written a note reminding us that the DCS Autumn Sale is wrapping up with 50% discounts on many products coming to a close on the 3rd of December at 23:59 GMT.

Grayflag Sinai launches today

Multiplayer fans with the DCS: Sinai map may be interested to know that popular server operators Grayflag have come up with a new server that makes use of the still relatively new DCS: Sinai map. The server has a fictional campaign that’s fiction references the old Command & Conquer series (rather than drawing from the headlines of 2023) with Bluefor and Redfor units fighting across the Sinai area with a mix of systems on both sides which should make for some challenging operations.

A discussion on r/Hoggit helps fill in some details.

  1. Very cool that the Kh-29 is getting some love. If only they would put it on the KA-50. The Ka-25 is good fun, but a 29 is a 29 after all. 🙂

    1. I still hope for a full fidelity Su-25 to fit something like this on one day!

      1. Absolutely! Either Su-25 version would be great. Might have to do some flying with the Su-25 today before Deephack’s DCS podcast today at (around) 2PM… which Stormbirds is mentioned on every week. Still waiting for your guest appearance. 🙂

  2. It would be amazing to see both MiG-23 and Kola come out in 2024! Together they would make some wonderful late Cold War scenarios. However, I bet that MiG-23 will only come out in the very end of the year, if at all in 2024. Too bad I would probably get conscripted by then as I graduate from university(.

  3. There is a video on Youtube with a former Su-25 pilot and he remembers that they could not launch the KH 29 because there was not such a large shooting range in Czechoslovakia, because every second missile failed and flew away.
