Alright folks, put on your speculation, skepticism and rumour mill hats on for this one. An image has begun circulating around the IL-2 community that has attracted quite a bit of attention. Is it real? Is it a fabrication? Let’s have a look.

Update: Debunked.

Sabre, Chosin, Korea?

The image above has been shared a few times across the IL-2 community over the last 24 hours. The original source, which I’ve struggled to track down or verify, purportedly comes from the Russian language official IL-2 Discord.

The image of course shows an F-86 Sabre with a “Battle of the Chosin” title in the same format that we’ve seen other prior IL-2 titles. The IL-2 Great Battles Series badge is located on the bottom left. Tucked away on the bottom right corner you’ll see some text, written in English, that says “Busan terrain WIP 50-53 not for distro.” Obviously, it has been distributed.

The Battle of the Chosin likely references the Chosin reservoir battle or campaign as it’s sometimes referred to. Chinese and primarily American troops battled it out with the American X Corps briefly surrounded before eventually breaking through. Loses on both sides were extensive.

If this is actually the title for the series it likely is representative as a central point to a wider campaign much the way Bodenplatte references a single, one-day, battle, but the sim experience itself covers months surrounding it.

Although well composed, I’m undecided if this is a leak of an upcoming title or if it’s something a fan put together. Both are possibilities but until we hear something from official sources, anything you see out in the community about this should be regarded with a high degree of skepticism. I, of course, speculated that the series may make the leap to Korea quite some time ago. Still waiting to find out if my guess was a good one or not.

I’ll update the article if more information develops.

Update: Debunked

More information has come out since writing this. One reader mentioned to me that the markings on the F-86 are not from a Korean era Sabre but rather a European one from later on. 1CGS are typically good at getting those details right so that pushes it towards debunked. And then…

The original image is actually a screenshot from P3D posted in an IL-2 forum post in July 2019.

Quite a few people in the community still think that Korea is where the series is going so this just feeds into the vacuum that currently exists.

  1. I wish this was real, but it’s been debunked. People on hoggit found it was a Prepar3D screenshot that the supposed leaker posted elsewhere years ago. Proof:

Thanks for that! I hadn’t seen the link. Time to update the article.

  2. I just really hope this spurs them to announce. Whatever IL-2 does, they do it better than anyone else, their combat flight sim experience in VR is unmatched. I really hope they announce it!

  3. Korean War makes a lot of sense in terms of ginning up interest/fresh blood. I mean, “jets” alone makes it desirable.

OTOH, Korea was also a Carrier War, tho to a lesser extent than WW2 PTO…

You could limp along with Corsairs, Skyraiders, SeaFires & Sea Furies operating from dirt strips, but c’mon, man…!

Not to mention that Panthers and such played a significant role, etc.

I could care less about B-29/B-50s – the current BoX don’t seem to suffer too much from the lack of heavies…

And as far as clickable cockpits, it’s not a core Value Prop of IL2. The variety of plane sets IS. Only way I’d go for click pits is if they have EXTENSIVE market research to support that move.

Whatever they do, it’s GOT to be something fresh, IMHO. More Red Stars vs Iron Crosses just ain’t gonna cut it.

  4. Straight wing: I’m rolling with F-84 Thunderjet in the image.

Don’t mind me though, straight or swept won’t matter a bit if we get IL-2 Korea someday 🙂

I quite like that shot of the F-84. If we do get Korea I want to fly that one 🙂

  5. I told you ages ago that it would be Korea and I stand by that. Whether or not this is genuine, that theatre remains the most likely / logical next step.

Why they feel the need to conceal this remains unclear and arguably harming their reputation.

  7. I’m curious about the purpose of this hoax.

Did DetCord12B just create it for fun, or could there be some hidden agenda behind it?

Tension seems quite high in the Il-2 community recently, so I never know what to expect.

  8. I also think the first theater of war based on 1C new game engine will be a jetgame. Isn’t so that jets are more popular in DCS then the whole WW2 scene?

Btw thanks for this juice news, while debunked it’s always interesting.

  9. Whatever sim this new one is going to portray, we can probably be sure it’s biased To Russia’s involvement in some way.

This is all this Biased Russian company heve ever done and from the beginning with ROF.

So I highly doubt it will be a Pacific Theatre, Jason is already doing this. Highly doubt they will do Korea or Vietnam either, it does not fit with their ideology of Mother Russia supremacy.

Also, there is the latest Sheriff in town in Mother Russia called Vladimir Putin, he is no Newbie to Evil, we all know that, but his time has come and is not getting any younger and he wants a reputation to go out with in a bang, so much so he threatens Nukes to the West and anyone that opposes him or does not grovel to him, a tiny little midget EX KGB man Dictator … and indeed any one that does dare oppose him gets shot down in mid air or evidently falls out of large tower buildings with non safety windows to prevent such issues the Western World has.

Sorry Folks, but if IL2 Company can politically snipe about Putins aggression, then so can I, they will not get one more penny out me EVER, even if they manage to produce a sim with decent AI this time that I’m sure they are quite incapable of ever programming.

I have Friends and Family in Ukraine just now 😦

PS: I hope I don’t get mysteriously poisoned for saying this.
