This week’s DCS World Weekend News update is primarily focused on the work by Grinnelli Designs on their F-100 Super Sabre for DCS World. There’s also a short update on some graphics updates for DCS World… around grass. So let’s have a look!

Developing the F-100

Grinnelli Designs are busy working away on the DCS: F-100D Super Sabre. Progress appears steady on the project and the team have provided a progress tracker on their website so everyone can get a quick snapshot of where the team is at.

A member of the team got a particularly memorable experience going hands on with an F-100 requiring some additional servicing work while flying out of Fort Wayne, Indiana. The work included pulling the tail section off for engine servicing. A video developer log has been released showing off the scanning process with the real world F-100, talking about the one of a kind hands on experience, and talking about the team’s efforts to recreate the aircraft’s handling. F-100 certainly seems to be in capable hands!

Some additional screenshots have been released to the DCS World Screenshots section showing off some of the detailed scans of the F-100’s cockpit and some of the items within it.

The grass

DCS World’s mostly uniform looking grass is looking less uniform with some procedural grass technology updates that are coming to the sim. We’ve already seen some updates with the implementation of Screen Space Shadows (SSS) to improve the overall look and it looks like future updates will make it even better.

New visual effects are planned to make the vegetation react to explosions, gun fire, and aircraft. Plenty of potential visual effect improvements for low flying aircraft and helicopters.

Amazing. Thanks for the comment Dan!

Do you fly DCS much and will you be picking up this module when it comes out? Always curious how former pilots of a particular aircraft interact with sims.

  3. I saw that F-100 fly in an airshow in Fort Wayne a couple years ago. For me it was one of the high points of the show. That OG afterburner is something else!

I’ve never seen one yet but I hope maybe one day I will. Does it have a MiG-17 style afterburner where there isn’t so much of a afterburner cone as there is a sheet of flame shooting out the back? One of the wildest things I’ve seen at an airshow.

      1. That’s basically it. Doesn’t look like it’s providing much thrust. It’s like a blow torch with random extra sputters. It would be cool to see how well they can match the effect in DCS.
