A big change is coming to DCS World as Eagle Dynamics streamlines their release system and does away with the traditional Stable and Open Beta updates. We also have a terrific new F-4 trailer, the F-4 manual, and a small update from the folks at AviaStorm on their Tornado project for DCS World. Some great updates all around! Let’s have a look!

Say hello to unified releases for DCS World

Years ago I wrote an editorial that the Stable/Open beta structure for DCS World was not the best way to approach releases on the platform. It wasn’t entirely received positively but I stand by my opinion that the structure as it has been for the last several years wasn’t doing anyone any good and that the open beta for DCS wasn’t really a traditional beta test anyways. You can read my ramblings on that subject matter here.

The big news is that things are indeed changing and the traditional open beta and stable releases are going away in favour of a unified release structure.

This move aims to streamline the update process, reduce fragmentation, and ensure that all pilots have access to the latest features and improvements simultaneously. This unified approach will not only simplify the user experience but also allow for more efficient development cycles, fostering a more cohesive and connected community. Your feedback has been invaluable in shaping this decision, and we are excited to embark on this new journey together.

DCS World Weekend News

Official statements aside, this is going to make things a lot easier for new users coming into DCS World. There are countless times that I or others have told newcomers that almost no multiplayer servers support anything but the open beta or that the majority of the community play open beta. Even more importantly, with the old structure it was possible that some modules and updates can take several months to arrive in a stable update. In effect, open beta was just the DCS World release.

If you can’t tell already, I think this is a good move and I’m happy to see it.

First in, last out with the Phantom

A new cinematic has just come out from Heatblur with an outstanding 4 minute 20 second cinematic showcasing the F-4E Phantom II in a Wild Weasel mission. While the first F-4 draws fire, the second one attempts to make the kill. Watch the dramatic trailer to see how that goes.

The launch of this cinematic likely means that release is now much closer to imminent. We saw something similar with the F-14 giving us just few weeks between a couple of cinematic features and then the launch of the module into early access. Phantom time coming right up!

The manual for the DCS: F-4E is also out as of today. Available on the Heatblur website, the manual covers the cockpit, systems, weapons, Jester AI and more. The manual is already quite extensive and contains quite a bit of depth to systems and features – for example, I was just reading about the Auto Clear function on the 20mm Vulcan with a spin-down time of 1-second preventing additional firing until its had a chance to clear. Typical Heatblur levels of extreme detail.

AviaStorm Tornado update

A smaller but still nice to see update comes from AviaStorm. Their report indicates that five 3D artists are currently working on the project.

AviaStorm has had the opportunity to examine many small details of this aircraft for the level of detail that DCS demands. Such details may not initially stand out, or even be noticed by most customers, but they are crucial in the context of creating a masterpiece that is the Tornado. An example includes the emergency RAM air flap and two cooling flaps.

It’s not much but hopefully we’ll see the Tornado begin to come together over the next couple of years. It’s certainly a module that I’m anticipating highly!

  1. That was some phunky Phantom action for sure! Looks like you could spend hours in this plane just checking out all the audio/visual fanciness. Defintely going to be interesting.

Very much so! Yet another work of art!

    2. It was a well done ‘cinematic’ as well. I liked that they added the interlace artefacts, like it was a TV show from the 80s or early 90s. It would have looked like a good quality made for TV movie except for one thing, the human faces. But you can’t blame HB for that. Or ED or anyone, really. I certainly don’t ‘fly’ DCS so I can admire the subsurface scattering on the human models :D. No, it was beautifully done. I especially liked the Maverick screen – I hadn’t realised the F-4s ever used Mavs, but it makes sense, given the time frames.

  2. Frankly, the current Beta/Release approach is not good. New players installing for the first time face a choice between options described as “Best choice for Single Players” and “Best choice for Multiplayer mode”. That just leads to more confusion and annoyance in a game that is quite intimidating even without these issues.

Done correctly, public beta releases and other test versions work well in a number of games.

New players should never be steered towards a beta version. Public beta releases (if used) should be thoroughly tested in closed beta first, so that new content doesn’t get stuck in open beta for long periods.

I know that smaller companies struggle to establish sufficiently large test teams, but other flight sims seem to have no problems recruiting volunteers for closed test from the ranks of enthusiasts.

    1. Well said. My feeling is that it was setup this way when the Public Beta version was a lot more unreliable and buggy, a kind of caveat emptor situation. But now that Beta is as solid as many release softwares, it makes no sense from where I’m standing. If the beta is more of a problem in multi (I only ‘fly’ SP so I don’t know from experience) maybe that should have been made explicit, as in – MP version and SP version? And yes, DCS has major problems with usability. I’m not talking about once you’re in a plane, which isn’t easy but as it reflects the real world it makes sense, it also has things like tool tips which really help (I recently installed Steel Beasts and I really miss the tooltips on clickable elements). The admin stuff, menus, structure of missions, campaigns, training etc is pretty bad. I believe we forget how bad as once you’ve learned something you don’t need it to be as intuitive. At least, that’s how it is for me. I have to remind myself how frustratingly awful I thought it was when I first started, and how poor I felt the usability was. I understand that ED has a small team and would prefer to devote resources to ‘in-flight’ stuff, but I do wonder how much the admin interface turns potential customers off before they get comfortable.

  3. Meh…watched the video SMH at the laziness of the folks at HB. They should know better than to invoke the term Wild Weasel and associate it with the F-4E. I suspect few DCS enthusiasts realize the Wild Weasel term was expressly reserved for Phantoms with special electronics operated by the EWO. Those two airplanes in the video were using their ALR-46 displays as poor man’s equivalent. HB could have just as easily titled this video SEAD, omitted the YGBSM weasel patch and be done with it.

I suppose the next video HB will paint F-4Es in colorful USN/USMC paint schemes and operate off carriers. It is their sandbox.

I need to brush up on my F-4 models for sure. Wild Weasel was probably not the most accurate choice. SEAD would be right as you say.

      The video was definitely exciting.

    3. When I saw the title I thought – oh wow, are they also bringing us the F-4G… but no its the other half of the hunter killer team so whilst not the hunter as the G was, but there is a small truth to it as a WW asset.

Anyway – nicely done video as always from HB and with the release of the manual things are getting closer.

    4. Is Hampton’s book accurate on this? My understanding also was that the Weasel (though Mongoose was arguably a better anthropomorphism) had specific systems.

But I respectfully disagree on a faux USN scheme. Just because.

    5. Little reason for the USN/USMC theory when they already have a navalised Phantom version pencilled in for a module in its own right.
