Yesterday, the 1CGS team posted a developer video/podcast providing some information and updates on what they are working on. It’s only available in Russian at the moment so getting details on exactly what was said has been difficult but fortunately we do have some summarization of what was talked about thanks to community members. Here’s what we know.

Translated information

In what will surely baffle some (or many?) the latest developer update comes in video form without any translation from Russian – they were relying on auto caption to provide English translation but at the moment it hasn’t happened yet. Fortunately the community has stepped in to fill the gap.

Community members Flying_Anchor and Wise from the IL-2 forums helped to summarize what was mentioned.

The team are planning for the new title to be able to support 80-100 AI in a scene, feature DirectX12 with PBR (physically based rendering) textures, a new damage model and new AI logic. They also want to improve the radio communications and feature ground based radar systems too. Apparently about 30% of the planned content for the new title is ready.

There’s mention of continued support for Great Battles with the Odessa and Karelia theatres on the way. Added Great Battles content includes the La-7, Yak-3 and I-153 already mentioned before and then also mentioned doing a late model IL-2 (though a IL-10 has been mentioned before).

They also say they want to do Pacific content in the future.

There remains conflicted information on if the next sim is a separate product or an upgrade to the current series. While I’ve been adamant that it seems unlikely that the old content would be compatible with what they are planning, I have seen various discussions going back and forth in the community on what was said and what was meant. So for now we’ll just have to wait and see.

Did we learn anything new? Just a few morsels of information but it’s something. If you want to watch the latest video… it’s available here.

Some additional comments have come out that I thought everyone should know about.

  • Early Yak-1 and LaGG-3 variants are possible for Great Battles.
  • Translation is unclear still but it sounds more like Great Battles content might be upgraded to the new sim engine in time, but the new sim would be distinct.
  • Large formations would rely on a simplified flight and AI model (i.e. for the B-29 shown off at the start of the year) to help save on CPU resources.
  • Reportedly the wait to have the new project announce won’t be long now.

  1. Great to hear that they’re aiming to support 80-100 AI in a scene.

Performance has been a problem in Great Battles even with just a few flights present, which limited the types of scenarios that could be simulated.

Absolutely. That’d be a big step forward.

  2. Re: the new title, on one hand they probably could make it a module (look at the original IL2 series) but on the other its probably a good idea to make a clean(ish) break and go with a new one and not have to worry too much about breaking/updating the existing modules.

Lets see what they come up with

  3. Think better to wait for the official English YT version, that must showed up in a few weeks, if 1C does have a wise communication employee.
But sure they seem to be in a state of hurry to push out all the plane and WW1 project’s that are on the shelf. Still waiting for the Russian uberplane the Mig3, that could be the last plane release.

btw thanks for this message and translation research.

  5. I feel somewhat conflicted about the whole situation.
The bits of information are interesting but not really clear. I thought (tbh) after my haitus of roundabout 2 years things would have cleared up a bit but it doesn’t look like it xD

I think the biggest advantage of the GB Series always was their interchangeability/crossplay between the modules. Heck even the “golden/old” Il-2 1946 was that good because it had this vast majority of planes ans sub versions to choose from.

I guess the new project as earlier stated/indicated will be a split from the current GB version, which is understandable (to have a fresh start enginewise), but its also robbing IL-2 of its greatest benefit at the same time. A part of me really hopes that they’ve spent the time (like DCS) of largely revamping their current engine to a new standard while maintaining compactibily with the series itself, but we will see. I mean in theory (if this is not the case) they could do it like with the RoF planes but I’m not sure if I would buy them (again) since unlike the RoF stuff I’ve got everything in GB^^.
No matter what, I will soon start to fly again in the Skies of IL-2 (even bought a buddy of mine the modules to fly together^^) and see where it will be going. I’m also looking forward to the Ta-152 and the Karelia map 🙂

    Greetings Big Al

    1. Please keep in mind that this is a 10 year old engine. Lots of new technology has been developed in the meantime and lessons learned. If they bring the engine up to date with new technology and then squeeze out another 10 years and 10 modules or so, you’d have another great series that offers functionality that we’d never get with the old engine.

      1. That is surely an important factor. I mean if the positive aspects outweigh the negatives, I’m all in on that. Don’t get me wrong. And to be fair, when IL-2 Battle of Stalingrad started it was also somewhat “limited” regarding it’s plane choice etc. – someone starting now or in the last couple of years didn’t experience that.
