Thirty seconds of DCS: Kola

With DCS: Kola now just around the corner, we’re starting to see more promotional pieces come out about the map. A new thirty second video is being circulated in the community and its worth a look!

Update: It seems maybe this video was released prematurely and is now private. I will update the article if/when it re-emerges.

Orbx’s YouTube channel is now host to a new 30 second short video featuring DCS: Kola which, as we now know, is just a week away from release. Check out the short video and these screen captures to see more of DCS: Kola in action.

If the video is any indication, it seems that DCS: Kola may also end up being available for sale on OrbxDirect, the company’s own storefront. Presumably we’ll see it for sale on the DCS World e-Shop and on Steam too. More details as they come!

    Very cool to see ORBX playing with DCS. Looking forward to seeing the fine details of the textures. If anyone can do it, it should be ORBX.

    Interesting video – seems like they (Orbx) wanted to highlight the combat side of things which is understandable as they have come from non combat sims. Personally I would have liked to see more of the scenery rather than Hornets and Fulcrums fighting over it – sure with the release trailer things will expand out.

    Still – I’m looking forward to flying over it next weekend.

      ED made the same mistake with Normandy 2, IIRC…

      The vid was a map promo, but almost exclusively consisted of a close-up dogfight between Spits & 109’s. Epic dogfight, but almost nothing of the scenery.

        The consensus (tho limited “n”) is that the vid was recorded with relatively low graphics settings (some guys pointing out low/no shadows, AA artifacts, etc.) and that was why it wasn’t publicized – and why it was taken down. Definitely didn’t appear on the OrbxDirect channel.

        I got the chance to give it a few playthroughs at 1/4 speed and I have to say the topography is stunning and will be great fun to do any sort of low level ops.

        The lighting was all Golden Hour early a.m./late p.m., so almost impossible to clearly see everything to make a judgment call on overall quality.

        I didn’t look at it with a hyper detailed eye, so all I can say is that it generally looks good and I’m really looking forward to the release!

        It was definitely looking a bit rough some in places and by that I mean quite a bit of compression artifacts. Still, the map itself appears impressive despite that.

        Looking forward to getting my hands on it. I’ll probably do some companion videos for a review so folks can actually see it.

    Can’t wait! I grew up in that area, next to Andoya Air Force Base. I remember F-4s, F-14s, A-6s, F-15s, F-18s, Buccaneers, Jaguars, Tornadoes, Harriers, Atlantiques, E-3s, Nimrods, C-5s etc etc. visiting. And seeing the skies covered in twisting contrails. It was great! Getting to fly over it in an F-16, albeit in DCS, will be as close to a childhood dream come true as I’m ever likely to get.
    The base in the JHMCS shot is Bodø Air Base. 331 and 332 squadrons of the Norwegian Air Force was based there with F-16s.

    If they do offer the ability to ship it via their own storefront then that isn’t a bad thing as it seems to work quite well for stuff i’ve bought for MSFS and does differential updates quite well (only gripe is it makes you log in again every time the underlying app updates). Whether or not it means they will use it to ship any updates outside of DCS’s current cadence is another thing.

      It would be pretty cool to see “DCS World” appear in my Orbx desktop scenery app 🙂

      Aside from the purchase, I wonder if official modules can be distributed outside of the main game…?

      The 3rd Party Dev contract that showed up in rDCSExposed said ED takes on all that responsibility, but I can’t remember it saying whether it was permitted or not…

        I expect ED would still insist on managing the licence/activation in such scenarios. It is however the first time I can recall a third party being one for whom hosting multi-GB scenery packages is something they excel at already. If I had to bet then I expect ED will exclusively handle the lot, but i’d not absolutely rule it out.

    From the above posts I get the impression that the method of distribution is not yet known. Can anyone enlighten me (and perhaps the other forum readers)? I would like to get this add-on tomorrow but I do not know how.

      Undoubtedly available from the e-Shop and likely from Steam as usual. The third method, OrbxDirect, would be a first for DCS but seems likely.

    I bought the scenery through the DCS E-Shop. Success, although I have yet to install the scenery. Just wanted to let you know (if needed) that the purchase process works fine. The reason for my forum posts was that I was uncertain whether this scenery from an external source would prove difficult. No, it seems.

      I don’t think that was ever in doubt, was it? Ugra Media and OnReTech have both released through the e-Shop successfully. The only difference here is that Orbx are also selling their product directly… a first for a DCS map though not a first for a DCS module.

      Glad your purchase went through!
