It’s not the news anyone was hoping to hear this morning but we’ve received official word that the next DCS World patch has been delayed by 24-hours while the Eagle Dynamics team solves a problem discovered late in testing. Here’s what we know.

Phantom caught up in the delay

Eagle Dynamics used the term “blocking issues” in relation to the problem discovered with the build that was supposed to release today. This language is typically used to denote a serious enough issue that releasing the software would not be ideal.

While I’m sure frustration is no doubt settling over the community over the delay, it is unfortunately the case where this sort of thing happens and the alternative is usually never a good thing.

The patch update thread, managed by ED community manager BIGNEWY has been updated with the following statement:

Dear all, during final checks some blocking issues were found and we will require some time to resolve them. We want the F-4E launch to be the best experience it can be so delaying for one day is the best option, thank you for your understanding and patience.

Meanwhile we’ve heard word that the blocking issue is not with the Phantom itself but with something else in the update. DCS World updates do, as most of you know, cover a wide range of core code and module updates and a serious blocking issue in one of those areas could cause problems across a wide range of situations. We don’t know the details right now beyond that but a 24 hour delay is anticipated.

I know excitement for the Phantom and the update has likely turned to frustration by now but hopefully a short delay in a long saga of the release of this highly anticipated module will be just a minor bump in the road.

  1. A hard call I’m sure, but understandable.

I do feel pretty bad for the many people who I’m sure took off work or otherwise cleared their schedules today for the F-4.

      Absolutely. These things unfortunately happen.

I think many fail to realize that DCS is not a AAA title. There aren’t a legion of coders, artists, and tools just waiting around to be useful. DCS is a very niche product and expecting the more polished experiences (not always but in comparison) of AAA titles from ED is just not realistic. They’re a distributed team with some in very close proximity of an IRL warzone (last I read). Delays suck from the point of view of those who are anxiously awaiting the release of the Phantom and the supporting/accompanying DCS update, but please remember this is a team of real people doing their best. DCS is not now and never will be “perfect”, and that’s OK. I, for one, appreciate what we DO have thanks to their efforts.

    1. Things do just seem to stalk this module, don’t they?

I’ve still got my pre-order though. It will get here when it gets here, and I’ll play it when I get to it.

  4. I just appreciate that a studio is willing to not release known bugs, how often have we seen an over-commitment to the release date across the industry

A blocker bug usually means something fairly serious too so it’s good to wait and solve it for sure.
