We’ve got a bunch of new videos featuring the DCS: OH-58D Kiowa Warrior coming at us over the last few days plus the usual updates from Eagle Dynamics in their DCS World Weekend News update. This week they are talking about the DCS: F-16C INS+GPS system and about a new scripted campaign for the DCS: F/A-18C Hornet. Let’s have a look!

F-16C INS+GPS update

Periodically, Eagle Dynamics release a whitepaper (basically a formal informational document) on some of the development work they’ve been doing. A new whitepaper has been released today detailing some of the work that they’ve done to deeply simulate the inertial navigation and global positioning system (INS and GPS) work on the DCS: F-16C.

It’s a complex process and some (much!) of what’s discussed is well over my head but if you’re interested in the technical side of how some of this is put together you can read about it here in this whitepaper PDF.

These updates are coming to the jet soon.

New F/A-18C campaign

A new DCS: F/A-18C campaign is on the way. Operation Mountain Breeze is loosely based on the Syrian Civil War except with the formation of a no-fly zone established over the western parts of the country. Here’s part of the description:

This story-driven campaign places you in the boots of a junior, US Navy pilot of the VFA-131 Wildcats squadron. Your skills as an F/A-18C pilot will be tested across 15 challenging missions. You’ll receive detailed mission briefings with charts and kneeboards that can be accessed both in-game and PDF briefing documents. Detailed briefings are provided by the squadron skipper and flight lead using “in-game” mission briefings. Performance-based feedback will be provided after each mission. Voice-overs narratives between missions enhance immersion and create a compelling and varied experience.

Dogfights, SEAD, CAS and strike missions are all part of the experience. The update doesn’t mention it but presumably this campaign is slated for the next major update update.

You can read about the campaign and the INS+GPS whitepaper here on the DCS World Weekend News.

Rounding-up the Kiowa videos

We’ve got previews coming fast and furious now for the next DCS World module set for release. DCS: OH-58D Kiowa Warrior is looking like its ready for the limelight and a few content creators are already releasing videos for the aircraft. Here’s some notable ones!

In-case you missed it from earlier in the week, Casmo who was an OH-58D pilot in the past, gives his thoughts and impressions on the module.

Another great video from Casmo goes over how to use the AI-pilot system. This system should be terrific for keeping the helicopter stable while you switch to the co-pilot seat and start messing around with the various sensors. Great feature to have!

It looks like 104th_Maverick is flying the Kiowa too with some tutorial videos rolling out. Here are a couple of them.

Want something longer form? Casmo’s also been streaming his flying of the module. It’s definitely worth a watch!

More videos are coming so stay tuned!

  1. Not much in this update for me, but I know a bunch of people will be happy for the Kiowa stuff.

    Now where’s my Chinook!

The Chinook will be the next module to bankrupt the sim budget 🙂 And we won’t have to wait very long!

You can’t bankrupt the sim budget.

You just allocate more money to it!

  2. Hopefully we will see a load of developer news updates from the various third party development teams that are working on their planes and maps for DCS.

Well, after Casmo’s first impressions, where he says, despite long term misgivings, that PolyChop “nailed” the flight model, I can see what my favorite DCSW helo is going to be.

I’ve just got to figure out how to datalink with BlackShark and life will be GOOD! 🙂

(interesting: Casmo said they didn’t ever have datalink when he flew them and they just walked people on over the radio with good comms & good map refs).

  4. Me and a buddy of mine were talking about the quality of the lates releases i.e., Orbex’s Kola, Heatblur’s F4 and soon Polychop’s Kiowa and were hopeful that other 3rd part developers will step their game up and release higher quality modules in the future. Could be wishful thinking but a sim pilot can dream cant we?
