Coming in a little late on this but nonetheless its worth reporting that the latest and highly anticipated update for DCS World has also been delayed in addition to the delay for the CH-47F. The update, sans the new helicopter, was also intended to bring the new launcher, Baltic Dragon’s The Gamblers campaign and the DCS: Afghanistan map. What do we know about the latest update delay? We have a little to go on.

Next update still coming, but delayed

A significant update to any sim is always hotly anticipated and there’s invariably going to be some disappointment when an update doesn’t arrive on time. Over the last couple of days there’s been the news that the DCS: CH-47F module was being delayed while issues with the module were sorted out. It seems now too that the update that also comes packaged with the new launcher and the new Afghanistan map are delayed too.

Here’s what we know from Eagle Dynamics.

Dear All,

We regret to inform you that additional time is required to thoroughly test the recent fixes, necessitating another delay. We will communicate the new patch date as soon as the tasks are completed.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support.

That was followed by plenty of discussion and an update from Matt Wagner on the DCS World Discord group.

Dear all, our release dates are best estimated based on the scope of work, timelines, and adhering as much as possible to a set schedule. These can never be an exact science as it’s heavily influenced by the results of testing both internally and externally. Given the massive nature of DCS and multiple 1st and 3rd party projects involved, it’s always possible that a stopper bug(s) will be discovered shortly before a planned release. This is such a case, twice. We can either release with the stopper bug(s) or delay to address them. Clearly we have chosen the latter and taken it on the chin. We understand that many of you are deeply upset by the delays of this massive update (perhaps the single biggest update in DCS), but we kindly ask for your patience as we sort the stoppers out.

Matt Wagner on the DCS World Discord

Stopper bugs is a short for “showstopper” bugs or in other words bugs that seriously or significantly inhibit the normal use of the software. We definitely don’t want to deal with those on a release patch to the general public especially if it means that an important feature stops working or something gets in the way of stuff that was working before.

Whatever the case, we’ll be waiting a little bit longer for the new launcher, The Gamblers and DCS: Afghanistan, and the other items that we expect to see in DCS World updates. Stay tuned for more!

Update: Slipped my mind that Flaming Cliffs 2024 is also due in this update!

  1. It also includes the release of FC 2024, which is honestly the only thing I cared about.

  2. It’s probably because they’re broke, have been for a very long time. Thus explaining all the EA releases they’ve performed but rarely if ever having finished anything. All the leaks via Heatblur, Razbam, HSR and the F-15 radar debacle via Hoggit over the past several months at the very least lend credence to this. They release EA modules all over the place and never really fix any of the issues associated with them or complete them at all, followed by more early access modules, followed by more early access modules. This seems to be their business model.

They’re a Russian company with a P.O. Box in Switzerland that’s an obvious attempt to evade sanctions and ‘hold-harmless’ legal constraints via financial loopholes. They’ve folded and disbanded multiple LLC’s over the past several years and run their cash through a shady system of banks in Cyprus and Malta. If you wanna run an illegal and or grey operation, then Cyprus and Maltese banking institutions are the way to go given their laxed corporate bylaws and or oversight.

The worst part is that people have been pointing this stuff out for nearly a decade. No one seemed to care until recently, for obviously reasons.

I’m more inclined to think they did discover showstopper bugs. Following your line of thinking about a supposedly dire financial situation, they would be more likely to publish with those bugs or release modules too soon (which they apparantly decided not to do).

And where is your documentation supporting your assertion that they’re broke? Just because they use LLCs and bank in multiple countries doesn’t mean anything.

  3. Was looking forward to those winter textures for Kola, as well the excellent looking new textures for the SA map. Oh well.

  4. Everyone here knows how deadlines work. If you don’t have them, the work doesn’t get done. If you have them, things are not always ready. If it is a speech you can more or less improvisize with the preparations you already have. Programming is not that forgiving. So without the deadlines “two weeks” would end up being “four weeks” or more. I’ll take what we have.

I’d consider the possibility they’ve had some legal bills to pay recently as the duke it out with Razbam.

Maybe you don’t like Russia, but E.D’s operations are two different things from Russia. Don’t make generalizations, or propagate that E.D is going bankrupt without evidence. E.D is more like a multinational company.

  6. As I’ve said before, it’s self imposed. Why delay on Wednesday due to a “stopper” and claim it will release Thursday only to delay again, which is now 3 times in 2 weeks? Why not just delay the patch Wednesday and just launch it when it’s actually ready? The biggest problem is 2 modules that they took pre-order money for. When you take people’s money up front you take on the pressure of delivering. STOP the pre-orders and when the module is ready to release into E/A freeze it and launch it 2 weeks later after all your video marketing and hype. End of complaints.

  7. Not that it was a great system, but this was the intent behind maintaining both stable and beta branches.

I never want to go back to the open beta days. That made no sense at any point.

I don’t know what their behind the scenes are but there should be a closed beta process (which I assume they have) and some buffer time to test and solve issues with release candidate(s) and then a push to production. I don’t know if they do that and some issues cropped up that weren’t caught until release candidate or what.
