Sometime over the next couple of years I’m sure I will be writing about IL-2 Korea and accidentally write P-51D such is the designation worn deeply into my brain. The Korean War, being 5 years removed from WWII and seeing the birth of the independent U.S. Air Force meant of course that some designations changed and the P-51D gave way to the F-51D. Today’s latest developer diary from the 1C Game Studios team is focused on the F-51. Let’s have a look!
The Mustang goes back to war
With substantial numbers of Mustangs still available five years after the conclusion of World War II, the legendary Mustang made its way back into war filling a gap in Allied forces. With its long range, the F-51D was useful for long duration patrols and for flying to Korea from Japan. Something its shorter legged F-80 counterpart couldn’t do with any amount of duration.
While in WWII the P-51D was a premier fighter, the F-51D in Korea was not able to keep up with the new jet fighters and was often used for close air support and strike missions. Not something the vulnerable in-line engine was particularly well suited to, however, necessity and the vast quantities of the type meant that it was the best available weapon on hand. It’s an interesting and sometimes neglected story of the Mustang which makes it all the more fascinating!

Today’s developer diary is focused on the Mustang and 1CGS is showing off the exterior model which has been upgraded with new visuals.
We’ve got the screenshots above and then also a video here.
