Another Brief Room episode is out from 1C Game Studios and its focused on the F-51D Mustang that is being developed for the sim. Let’s have a look!

“Old Friend”

The title “Old Friend” is used on the latest episode of 1C Game Studio’s Brief Room and its talking about the Mustang which is best known for its WWII contributions but is sometimes forgotten as having a war time record in Korea as well.

The update talks about the history of the airplane and it reveals a few sim related features too. Available modifications for the F-51D will include a tail warning radar and the ability to fit ten rockets for ground attack – something that the F-51D was employed in primarily in Korea. They are uncertain about the use of 150 octane fuel in Korea and have decided to leave it in as a modification.

Another feature talked about is improved damage modeling details which will make incendiary bullets, i.e. the US API bullet type, relevant.

The other thing that stood out was a brief discussion about engine modeling. Great Battles uses a timer system with probability of engine failure, when run at certain settings for a long period of time, increasing once the timer has been hit and then the engine will fail sometime soon after. They are still working out how it will work in Korea but it sounds like they want to develop a more robust system for it.

All interesting tidbits as this sim develops. Stay tuned for more.

  1. I never really liked how Great Battles handled engine misuse. I’m someone who has separate control profiles for most planes in GB so that I can use the more accurate engine management systems, and yet I push the engine just a little too hard for a little too long and suddenly my engine stops working. I understand it’s difficult to incentivize players to stick to real life engine parameters, but the GB method always felt too harsh. I feel like there’s a better middle ground for engine abuse. I think a social engineering solution for more minor cases of engine abuse would be more appropriate. Something like the MS Combat Flight Simulator 2 post game debriefs where you’d get chewed out for not completing objectives, but for failing to maintain the plane properly.

  2. I wonder what they will present next after the F-51D. I assume it would be something like the Yak-9P or the F4U-4 Corsair so they can get the piston powered aircraft out of the way. They would look nice in some screen shots.

Good question. We haven’t seen the F4U or Yak-9P in-engine yet. We have seen the MiG-15 so I’m willing to bet that will be next.

      1. Come to think of it? Yeah, the MiG-15bis. I agree.
