Another IL-2 Korea update coming in this week with a new developer update and a short but very interesting video. This time they are focused on some of the development work they’ve put into the transportation networks in the sim including trains, vehicles, and some other cool stuff. Let’s have a look!

Transportation

It looks like IL-2 Korea is set to up the ante a bit with new transportation features. We’ve learned this thanks to a new developer diary update.

One of the new features is 3D railway visualization (they were previously flat textures). The road crossings are automatically generated at the whole system has physics properties baked into them so you can see in the video how a truck transporting an artillery piece goes up and over the crossing. The jeep traveling in the other direction does as well. The physics are a bit simplified here but the visuals from your aircraft will be no doubt very convincing.

The roadways now have varying thickness levels, they have to way transport options, and some roads will have electrical poles running alongside them. Far from being just static objects, the video shows off how they have their own physics attributed to them as well. No doubt running into a power line will be quite an issue in the new IL-2 Korea on those low level attack runs.

The truck running into the pole, causing it to collapse, also takes on damage and you can see the crew running away from it. Neat stuff!

  1. Dang – that is NICE!

  2. Impressive, the telephone poles held by the wires! I didn’t notice any Doppler effect from the train though 🙂

    1. True, no Doppler that I noticed either. Maybe a performance consideration. I don’t know.

  3. IL-2 Korea is going to be awesome! I wish that they could do the same with the trains and power poles falling over in IL-2 Great Battles. What exactly is stopping them from doing it?

    1. Unknown what would stop them from doing it but I suspect the problems are multifaceted. They’ve probably built a special class of road that has them next to it with all of the connected poles, damage model and collision physics. Because Great Battles only has a couple of road types you’d either have poles everywhere (going through buildings and forests and trees) or nowhere without retrofitting some key roads. I suspect it would be a big job. Easier to do when you’re starting over.

      1. Thanks for answering. Another question. Where would you like the series to go once they have finished with the Pacific War? I was thinking maybe Burma before they go back to Europe.

      2. Burmas a fascinating theatre but not likely a commercial success. They will go back to Europe almost undoubtedly.

      3. My best guess then is that they will go to the Med first and cover Italy, Sicily, and Tunisia. Then maybe a return to the Eastern Front. I reckon that they will cover battles like Kursk, Bagration and Berlin, though I hope they redo Stalingrad, Moscow, Bodenplatte and Normandy as I think those battles are too important to miss out on. Plus, with a new Normandy map they could reuse it for a Battle of Britain or Blitz scenario, or Allied raids on Northern France or the Baby Blitz. What would you make of this?

Sorry if I got a bit off topic.

      4. I don’t know that they will. I suspect as a dev team they don’t have much interest in that theatre.

Instead I think we’ll see Combat Pilot get there first. It’ll be several years down the road but I think they will tackle it.
