The latest developer blog from the 1CGS team is talking about new crater effects coming in IL-2 Korea. Let’s have a look!

New visual effects, gameplay too

A new developer diary is out with a new video showing off the new visual effects for craters. This is no longer a flat two-dimensional effect but rather a three dimensional one that has depth. That depth extends beneath the surface too so it can do things like cut into railroad tracks. Reportedly the same technology can also be leveraged for tunnels and for things like trenches.

There’s a limit to the number of craters allowed and apparently craters will be prioritized based on gameplay impact. The ones on runways will stick around longer than the ones in open fields.

  3. The vegetation draw distance is still awful. BoX levels of awful. As are the ugly flora sprites.

The cratering system is neat and all but the explosion effects, smoke, and the like still reek of the previous game and are very substandard. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still enthused when it comes to Korea, but I was expecting a lot more when it came to general effects.

    1. Keep in mind that the initial focus for any new engine is going to be more fundamental changes that require adaptations to how things are stored and created. Things like having real depth in maps and how the planes are designed. These changes have to pretty much be set in stone early on, so they have to be done early and right.

There is probably going to be 10 more years of development for the new engine, and that leaves plenty of room for changes that can be done later on, like vegetation improvements, explosion effects, etc. Don’t forget that we saw many improvements during the life of BoX, including things like much better clouds.

    2. Unclear if those items are something that is final or placeholder.
