Some interesting news today for DCS fans with the reveal of the coming soon DCS: F-5E Tiger II remaster version with a small upgrade price. We’ve also got a stunning new cinematic video featuring the sim’s new fog effects, a white paper on the subject, and news that a new DCS: F-16C campaign is inbound as well. Let’s get to it!

DCS: F-5E gets a remaster

It’s been mentioned a few times over the last year or two that Eagle Dynamics would be revisiting the DCS: F-5E Tiger II and giving the jet an upgrade. That has now come to pass as the team are set to release the remastered Tiger II in an update coming in the next update.

The update features a completely revamped exterior and interior model complete with a new first person view pilot model. There are reportedly also additional animations not present on the first version. Additional visual upgrades include new afterburner effects, new vortice effects based on angle of attack, as well as bug fixes and tuning to damage model, sensors, and avionics.

They also report that there are adjustments to laser guided bomb tuning, avionics improvements, wing bend and flex animations, new gun smoke behaviour and more. Reportedly, the fixes to the jet’s systems are aimed at both the original and the remastered version.

Following release of the remaster, current owners can upgrade for $9.99 USD and the original model will continue to exist in the sim though it will no longer be available for sale.

There has been a laundry list of additional features requested over the years that were included on some F-5Es that included extra Sidewinders on underwing pylons, Maverick missile employment, wingtip fuel tanks and an refuelling probe. At this point it doesn’t look like those features are in but we’ll be looking for clarification on that.

The F-5E remains a popular jet in DCS World thanks to the popularity of Cold War era servers and the type’s relative parity with the DCS: MiG-21bis and MiG-19. For those of you already with the jet in your hangar, does the $9.99 USD upgrade price seem like a no brainer or do you feel that you’re wanting a bit more with it? Let me know in the comments!

Ascending video features new fog effects

If you wanted a look at the new fog effects in DCS World, DCS: Ascending has you covered with a cinematic masterpiece of the kind we tend to associate with DCS World that shows off some of the new fog effects. The effect is shown in all kinds of different contexts including how the effect is used with snow and rain, what it looks like from the cockpit, showing rain and fog as it moves over the terrain, and how it can provide for near zero visibility landings.

I also want to ask eagle-eyed readers if this image, seen at 1:55 in the video, might be the rumoured new modern day or Cold War-era Germany map? It doesn’t look familiar to me on first glance.

For those more interested in the academic side of how the fog system has been modeled, Eagle Dynamics has released a white paper on the subject.

New DCS: F-16C campaign coming

The floodgates are open on DCS: F-16C campaigns with the new 13-mission strong Last out: Weasels over Syria II campaign coming soon. It will feature SEAD, DEAD, strike, and escort missions over the DCS: Syria map with 3,500 voiced lines and extensive documentation. Coming soon!

  1. Bought the F-5E at 50% off and have 7500 miles to burn, so this is a no brainer for me.

    1. Yeah a few ED Miles in the bank and this is a quick and easy upgrade. Do you fly it regularly?

      1. Not as much as I’d like. I’m still a newb to DCS, just trying to find the time as a new retiree. Bought a lot of it (as in big bucks) as a retirement plan.

      2. I’m nowhere close to retirement but I do sympathize with finding the time. Hopefully you get some time to check it out once it arrives. The F-5 is quite fun to fly!

  2. Happy to see the F5 get some love. Don’t mind paying for it either. Hope the Mi-8 is next.

    1. I’d love an Mi-8 update. That was my first sim helicopter so I’ll always have a bit of a soft spot for it.

  3. Thanks as always for the news update. I will upgrade my F-5 not because I fly it much but because I proved a point / won an argument online by landing it on and taking off from a Nimitz class twice as everyone watched.

      1. Quite possibly, but am sure many bold pilots have done something similar.

i hope that’s a Fulda Gap, would be a great addition. We could live Red Storm Rising.

  4. $10 for a long overdue upgrade to the most fun, kick the tires and light the fires jet in the ENTIRE sim…?

    ABSOLUTE NO-BRAINER! 🙂

Personally, I’d LOVE it if we could get the 2 extra Sidewinders as that would be a relatively minor amount of work since the module already has the systems, models, and hardpoints. Simple enough that it could theoretically be a mod…?

And while it’d be REALLY cool if we could also get Mavericks, that’d require an instrument panel re-model and coding changes to accommodate the seeker head targeting screen (i.e., it’d need to end up looking something like the A-10A cockpit). I think that amount of work would necessitate an additional upgrade fee. And TBH I’d be willing to pay it. 🙂

But I don’t blame them for not doing anything further than the visual upgrades and other stuff. And glad to see they’re porting the bug fixes and such into the current module – as they should.

Loving the fog/mist/haze effects!! Doing Cat III Minimum ILS approaches never looked good. From what we see in the videos, that should add a high degree of immersion to the experience. And the particle lighting effects/bloom shown off during the night shots is fantastic, too.

    Well done, ED!

The YouTuber Command T made that same notation re possible Germany map, as it doesn’t look like any of the other Green Maps.

Also, ED does like to drop easter eggs into their vids, and the fact the Migs are wearing Luftwaffe skins might be a clue 😉

What I really want to know is: “Hey, what are those Mig-29’s doing here…?”, as Wags is wont to say re pending modules. 🙂

    1. Yes saw the MiG-29’s so its clearly getting closer (but hey, its DCS, closer doesn’t mean soon…)

The upgrade to the F-5E – as most have said, its a no brainer, its an awesome little aircraft and looking forward to some visual improvements and some fixes coming down the line.

  5. This art was supposedly done 2 years ago for MAC. Wags teased the F-5E new art 2 years ago, saying it was done. ED is just charging us for that work… which I WILL be buying btw.

But unlike the A-10C II where we got some added features which justified the higher cost of the module after the update, the F-5E is only getting bugfixes and art.

At MINIMUM we should see a refueling boom- it was a standard detachable export option for goodness sake! It would require next to no time to implement and would satisfy a long time community request! It’s a no-brainer. We know they know how to do it – look how many FC3 and non FC-3 aircraft have a probe.

And I’m sorry, I don’t buy the “we don’t have documentation” argument this time. It’s a standard export option and there are many many air forces which still field the F-5E with the probe. If ED can accurately model an F-16 RWR and Radar, they can figure out which switch depressurizes the tanks in an F-5E for aerial refueling. After 7000 man hours, did they not look into it once despite folks asking for it for a decade? It’s such an easy addition.
