A new video from 1C Game Studios is out and its focused on jet engine modeling in IL-2 Korea and how it differs and has grown out of the simulation that they did of the Jumo 004 for the Great Battles Series. I’ve got a small summary of a few of the key points that I picked up on.
Jet engines
To summarize the latest video, we’ve got three different parts. First they introduce Alexander who is working on flight models and the jet engine models. IL-2 Great Battles already had the Jumo 004, a jet engine that has been well studied and has a lot of information about it, but they wanted to do more and represent different types of jet engines – both the centrifugal flow and the axial flow style as both are present on Korean war era jets.
They talk about some of the additional details that they are adding into the mix such as additional compressor surge modeling. Something already in the previous sim but now they are adding more layers of detail varying it based on angle of attack, airflow, damage to parts, and its possible for the surge to eventually destroy the engine.
They also report later on in the video that the extra layers of detail being put into the different types of engines are in the works, they aren’t working in the sim yet. Here’s a bit of what they said:
Simply put, there is a time allotted for this aircraft’s engine, and during that time its model will be improved. Currently, we have a model that generates thrust and operates over the full range of altitudes and speeds, but certain transition processes still need to be modeled. We are working on that right now. And so the damage model, the visual damage model, and some of the other features that we talked about today still need to be done.
They also mention the need to strike a balance between detailed modeling and not getting bogged down in it. Fair enough!
I also wanted to note that they mention a couple of different iterations of the F-86 engine though they say that right now they are focused on the F-86A with the J47. Some have suggested that a potential DLC package may include the later model F-86 with the more powerful J73. That’s speculation on my part (and others) so we’ll have to see how that pans out.
