The slightly controversial DCS: F-5E Tiger II remastered version is out together with the Arctic Thunder campaigns, Supercarrier updates and the long awaited fog and dust effects are out as part of the latest DCS World update. Let’s have a look!

Tiger II remastered

Coming in with bug fixes for all and a visual upgrade for those willing to do the upgrade (or buy it new), DCS: F-5E Tiger II remastered is now out and available for purchase. The update comes in at $10 USD for those who currently own the product while the purchase price remains unchanged at $59.99 USD.

The upgrade introduces an entirely remastered cockpit, new cockpit pilot model, and exterior with a small number of included liveries. The update also comes with some fixes, however, it does not add some of the features that players have been asking for.

According to the changelog, the F-5E comes with the following fixes.

  • Added GBU-12 to centerline, GBU-16 to inner and centerline, and GBU-10 to centerline loading options.
  • Fixed. Holding dogfight/resume or ACQ switch does not minimize range gate.
  • Fixed. Sight cage does not align the radar antenna to ARL.
  • Fixed. Mk-82 Snakeye should not have high-drag surfaces when safed.
  • Fixed. Gunsmoke does not follow the airframe/canopy.
  • Fixed. ADI adjustment./corrections.
  • Fixed. Gunsight Depression Axis.
  • Fixed. Mirrors display a distorted picture (fish eye).
  • Fixed. Wingtip launcher rails are fragile when exposed to rapid G-onset.
  • Fixed. F-5E Air-to-Air Missile Employment in MSL mode training mission.
  • Fixed. Rapid aft control input caution.
  • Fixed.  Issues with the FAST ERECT button in the cockpit and the overall performance of artificial horizon.
  • Fixed. Pitch/Roll gyro issues.

These should apply to both the original and remastered models, however, future updates are likely to come only to the remaster model.

This is a module that I’ll be having a close look at as soon as I’m able! Look for some impressions and a discussion on this latest upgrade project coming up.

Fog and Supercarrier

Some of the other headlining features in this update are some core changes to the sim’s weather systems specifically surrounding fog effects. While the updated cloud system, a gamechanger in the look of the sim, have been in place for a couple of years now, the sim’s fog system was not updated. Flying a mission featuring both fog and cloud effects was actually somewhat unpleasant as the two systems weren’t all that well integrated with each other. Meanwhile, the sandstorm dust effects introduced years ago have been broken for quite some time too. Fortunately, all of this has been sorted out with the new update.

A trailer, released a couple of weeks ago (and previously reported on), shows off the effects in a cinematic way.

Meanwhile, DCS: Supercarrier has gotten a fairly substantial update. This one was reportedly in the works for a couple of years now. It adds new deck crew with new plane directors giving you guidance on where to move your plane, which catapult to launch from and so forth.

The update notes also indicate the two following known issues:

  • The new deck crew and dynamic slots are under development and may not work correctly in some cases.
  • Some deck crew functionality may work incorrectly in case of changing slot while crew operations are in progress.

Hopefully those items can be resolved. Multiplayer Supercarrier issues have been a problem since the start particularly with non DCS F/A-18C modules. Hopefully everything works smoothly and as intended!

Campaigns galore

Three new campaigns come with the update with the headliner, the new Arctic Thunder series by well known campaign developers Reflected Simulations and Baltic Dragon offer up detailed campaign experiences with the DCS: Kola map. Set during a hypothetical war in the Kola region, the campaign plays out from two different perspectives with the F/A-18C flying with a Finnish Air Force squadron and F-16C with a USAF squadron.

The two joint campaigns are sold separately, however, their interlinked narratives and mission structure means that you could hypothetically play one campaign and then the other seeing the same mission from different perspectives.

The two headlining campaigns are joined by a third, no less important, release with a DCS: F-16C campaign called Last Out: Weasels over Syria II campaign by Ground Pounder Simulations.

Whatever your interest, there’s a lot packaged into the latest DCS update.

  1. I like the F5 upgrade. It’s not amazing but it’s good enough and it does brings the plane up a notch.

Only played with the fog a bit, just to see, haven’t flown through it yet. That will be tomorrow. Hope we get presets.

  2. I think DCS community will be split, one group will say that the F-5E update should be free for the old module owners, others – that it shouldn’t since it required a lot of work from developers, and another group will want more new features like more wing pylons, four Sidewinder config, new radios, etc. I will wait for reviews, I bought the A-10C update and I am very pleased, it was worth the price.

    1. The F5 upgrade is not as good as the A-10 upgrade, that for sure. But it’s only $10 and brings a nice plane up to standard. Not huge changes, but good changes. The plane graphics don’t feel old anymore, the module feels fresh. I like it.

The skin selection sucks. There should have been more and better skins.

More and better skins for sure! The initial offering was a bit less than should have been.

      3. And beyond those listed I was told that we will recreate all the skins the original module was ordered with.

That’s good to know! I’m writing something up on the F-5 remaster and missing liveries from the original was a point in there. If they are all coming back that’s good news for sure!

      5. ordered should be offered, sorry.

  3. Mixed feelings on if I want the upgrade or not – yeah it’s only $10, but I also rarely fly the o/g that already seems to do the job well enough. Might make more sense if it were a different variation of the F-5 instead. But, additional features and textures could be nice I guess (maybe, just not persuaded enough).

Leaning towards $10 spent better elsewhere for now though…

Definitely mixed feelings. I used some ED Miles to purchase it so it was “free” for me to check it out. It’s a good module but as an upgrade… mixed feelings. More details to come as soon as I can finish up an article!

  4. If they released the upgrade for free, while adding more functionality I bet they would’ve gotten a big boost in sales on the full module.

Instead they released a purely visual upgrade with what appears to be the same cockpit, just with better textures and a some key components getting a rework and to me it feels half assed and that I’m being nickle and dimed. On top of that the new version has far less liveries than the legacy version.

I bought they A-10 and KA-50 upgrades because they added new functionality and seemed like genuine re-works of the aircraft, especially inside the cockpits. They even rolled the cockpit upgrades to the older versions of the A-10 for free.

  5. IMHO, based on the standard they set with A-10C and Ka-50, they should’ve split the difference: add 2 extra sidewinders with the graphical upgrade.

That would be virtually no extra coding/dev work, and no extra modeling work since the pylons and missiles are already part of the main graphic/3d model.

Mavericks would’ve required an instrument panel remake in 3D, etc.

All that said, the OG badly needed a refresh, especially since it’s so frequently recommended to first time Full Fidelity buyers.

And, TBH, my personal threshold for acceptable graphics has gone up quite a bit since MSFS 2020 came out.

And speaking of MSFS, even the current/old F-5e is a better addon than just about anything similar in MSFS, so…

Given all that, and since I bought this way back in the day for $25 and have gotten many, many hours of enjoyment out of it, I’m definitely plunking down the $10. Money well spent.

It was definitely a badly needed refresh! I’ve got a review coming up soon as I can put the finishing touches on it but yeah I feel like they should have offered at least some small token feature, the extra Sidewinders would be an easy one, rather than nothing at all.

      1. One thing that shapes my opinions on DCSW modules is how they compare to similar addons in other simulators, and how pricing is generally structured in the other simulators.

There simply isn’t a better F-5 [insert DCSW plane here] available in any other sim. Not only isnt there a better one, but there isn’t one that’s even somewhat as good…

My “favorite” examples of this are the HeatBlur F-14 in both MSFS & DCSW, as well as the IFT MB-339 in MSFS & DCSW.

Even the same developer working in both sims is able to deliver a MUCH higher fidelity module in DCSW.

Not since MilViz was producing their Advanced series of addons for Prepar3D has there been anything even remotely close to module fidelity and quality in DCSW.

We could also add A2A Simulations to the “not since…” also, as their P-51 Mustang, Spitfire, and other warbirds are also on-par with DCSW. Unfortunately, they’re stuck in P3D with no idea when/if they’re coming to MSFS.

Anyhow, I consider DCSW modules to be well priced (since the flight sim itself is free), and I’m gonna go waaaaay out on a limb and say both the A-10C II and the Black Shark 3 $10 upgrades were UNDERpriced relative to flight sim market pricing. 😮

So, IMHO, the $10 graphical refresh is a pretty good deal – relatively speaking.

  6. F5-E cost me $2.55. Miles paid the rest. No brainer.
