The latest developer diary from 1C Game Studios for Korea IL-2 Series is focused on their audio system for the new sim. It sounds, litterally and figuratively, like they’ve overhauled the system and aimed for something with much more fidelity while also staying connected with the rest of the simulation. Let’s have a look.
Merlin’s purr, jet roar
Quite a bit has changed for audio with this new generation of IL-2 series with the new sound engine reportedly bringing together a “cleaner” sound stage with a combination of richer samples and new reverse engineered synthesized sounds to create the effects they are going for with the new sim.
Here’s a little of what they had to say about the revised audio setup.
Unlike in “Great Battles,” the engine sound system in “Korea” is more detailed. The acoustic picture changes dynamically depending on the direction of the sound source. For example, low-frequency murmuring tones dominate the rear of the jet, while the turbine whistle dominates the front. Additionally, the sound perspective is more elaborate — the sound of the engine varies significantly in both direction and distance from the source.
The F-51D Mustang and the F-80C-10 Shooting Star are the focus of a new video showing off sounds for both of these aircraft. There are start-up sounds, fly past sounds, and stationary camera sounds so you can really get a feel for it. They haven’t finalized cockpits yet so we don’t get that just yet but hopefully soon.
