Odessa and Leningrad: Siege and Liberation, the latest entry in the IL-2 Sturmovik: Great Battles series, has released into early access and is now available for purchase. We’ve got the price now on the early access discount too so let’s dig into it.

Some content now, more content later

IL-2 Sturmovik: Odessa and Leningrad – Siege and Liberation has released into early access. The final release intends to bring two maps, Odessa and Leningrad, and eight aircraft plus career modes for both covering both the 1941 and 1944 timelines. It’s an interesting package and slightly different than anything that the series has done previously.

The Odessa map, I-153 and LaGG-3 Series 4 are available today if you buy into the early access. The Leningrad map plus the Yak-1 Series 23, Yak-3 Series 9, Bf109E-4, Ju87D-5, La-7 and IL-2 Model 1944 are due to arrive through the summer, fall and into the winter of 2025.

One of the points that many of us were not sure about was pricing. We now have it! The whole package is priced at the standard $79.99 USD price point with early access coming in at $59.99 USD. That price will reportedly notch up slightly as more content comes out.

At the moment, its only available on the IL-2 Sturmovik website but typically these come to Steam before too long.

  1. Honestly, I think that $79.99 USD (I assume USD) is a good deal. I’m glad they didn’t increase the price.

What do you think will come next after Siege and Liberation? The IL-2 developers have stated that Siege and Liberation isn’t the end of the road for Great Battles.

To conclude today’s dev blog, we would like to mention that the development of the Great Battles game world will not end with Siege and Liberation. Soon, we will announce our plans for 2026, and we hope they surprise and delight you!”

I’m not expecting more than a few more Collector Planes. But they could always surprise.

      1. I’m looking forwards to whatever they announce. Even if it is merely a pack of aircraft for Finland and the Soviet Air Force.

  2. No-brainer for me – there is no other ww2 flightsim that brings you the ww2-aircombat experience better and more immersive (in VR) than il2-GB – it may not offer that high polish Unreal5 game-graphics but its graphics are nice and it runs fast even on older machines! I realy hope they keep on going with IL2-GB.

    1. Agreed. I would like to see them do at least one more module, and if they were to do one I think it should be about the Baltic Offensive and the Courland Pocket. Apologies for repeating myself here on this blog, but I think it would be a good idea.

And I would also again repeat that I don’t think we’ll see anything at that kind of scale. This one came together largely because there were content already in the pipeline that they could bring together. We’ve known about Odessa and the Finnish map for years. I don’t think there’s anything else out there….

I’m willing to be wrong on that of course. But don’t hold your breath. Korea and the next gen is undoubtedly going to be a focus going forward.

      2. I think Shamrock is on the money with some collector planes. I’d love to see them do more with tanks and ground units.

  3. pleasantly surprised by price , didnt expect it to be this low, 109 wing buff ok didnt know it was historicly sturmovik of germans, dont understand why they dont make P-47 as tuff also, its engines dont take mutch hits as in some pictures or stories from ww2

    1. The 109 used to have an absurdly weak wing. The theory is that the use of a single wider spar in the wing was modeled in a way where a hit to that spar caused the wing to fail, while other wings with multiple spars required all spars to be damaged. But this doesn’t seem to match actual combat.

You may recall that I did ☺️

I am glad to see it though. I think this will help it sell considerably better.

I’m not sure what drove the change to the wing, however, in practice I’m not seeing more than a marginal difference. It’s likely a subtle change to adjust for statistical anomalies.

As for the P-47. I think its reputation is slightly overplayed. It was a strong aircraft absolutely and Robert S Johnson’s story about the heavily damaged P-47 shows what was possible. That’s probably the statistical anomaly – the high end of what’s possible. The biggest problem the P-47 faces is what it fights against and a late war 109 lobbing 30mm or a FW190 with four 20mm blazing away melts every plane in a second or two. It doesn’t matter how well it’s made.

      1. I see its even cheaper on russian site, around 40$, i guess regonal pricing plays part now, i remenber before it was same price for all. 25% discount now is good deal, it probably wont be that cheap for long time.

      2. The P-47 reputation seems to mainly come from ground attack, where the air-cooled engine means that you can’t have a fluid leak causing the engine to seize.

It was probably mainly more resistant to AA shrapnel and smaller caliber rounds.

Absolutely! Lots of stories of coming back with battle damage to the engine. Cylinders blasted apart, bits of trees and even a brick in the engine compartment, etc. I think sometimes those stories then go a little too far… if you get hit by several 30mm shots you’re going down. If you get hit by a dozen or more 20mm shots you’re going down. It almost doesn’t matter what you’re flying.
