Heatblur did a magnificent job making their manual explaining the ins and outs of the DCS: F-4E Phantom II. It is available on the web and its available within the sim. But sometimes different approaches to learning are required and for that we have Chuck and his famous Chuck’s Guide to various DCS World aircraft. Its mandatory reading for many of my DCS World adventures and now its available for the Phantom!

Get to know the Phantom through the guide

With a vast array of munitions available, two seats, and plenty of potential capbilities, the F-4E Phantom is a very capable airplane. But its also a little complex when you dive into some of the finer details and that’s where various tutorials and manuals are out there and available to you.

As mentioned in my opening paragraph, Heatblur themselves have an excellent manual available online. You can read it any time you want. You can even move your mouse cursor over an item in the cockpit, while playing, and contextually bring up information on what’s going on there. Great!

Still, I often find Chuck’s approach to tutorials the easiest way for me to assimiliate the specific pieces of information I need. I want to do a specific task but I’ve forgotten all of the steps or I’ve forgotten one critical step and the whole thing just isn’t working. Chuck’s Guide is usually what comes to my rescue. Given how popular the guides are within the community, I know I’m not likely alone on that.

Chuck made the following statement about the process over here on the r/Hoggit community:

This project took about a whole year to complete. It was a daunting task, but in my humble opinion the gang at Heatblur Simulations deserved nothing less for their incredible work of art. I haven’t had this much fun writing a guide in years… the F-4 simply ticks all the right boxes for me. Ever since I was a kid, I was dreaming of flying something like the “Lead Sled”, putting to the test Enzo Ferrari’s old adage saying that “aerodynamics are for people who can’t build engines”.

I want to thank the team at Heatblur Simulations for their hard work, their willingness to innovate and for being a beacon of hope in these times of early access.

  1. Well now I’m curious why you called it it “Chucks infamous guide”? 🙂

Oooh that was not intended to be. Famous is the more correct usage. 🙂

      1. The only “infamous” thing I can think of is where Chuck – I think it was Chuck – did some work on an RB Harrier manual and when he ran into some difficulties, maybe related to the devs, RB made a lovely comment in the DCS forums: “Well no one asked him to do it.”

RB sure knows how to make friends.
