One of the aircraft of IL-2 Korea hasn’t been seen all that much yet and that is the F-84E Thunderjet. This aircraft is finally capturing some developer diary attention and we’ve got both a video and some screenshots that have been shared in recent days.

Here comes the thunder!

Six new screenshots and a “Brief Room” episode have been devote to the F-84 Thunderjet for IL-2 Korea.

I have a feeling that the F-84E Thunderjet is going to be a favourite of some IL-2 Korea flyers. The jet was a USAF workhorse that reportedly destroyed 60% of all ground targets in the campaign and manages to pack a significant punch with HVAR rockets, bombs and M3 machine guns. It was also slow to takeoff (often needing a 10,000 foot runway with full armament) and clearly lived in the shadow of the more glamorous F-86 Sabre.

The devs confirm both on social media and in the video that the aircraft’s wingtip tanks will be an available option. Important as most or all F-84s were equipped with the tanks in Korea. Also available is a modification that enables the aircraft to carry 32 rockets – with commensurate loss of aerodynamic efficiency. Solid rocket boosters will also be an option that adds extra thrust during takeoff.

Watch the episode here and learn more about this jet.

  1. Great to see it getting some attention for sure – it was definitely a workhorse but doesn’t have that appeal as the Sabre did/does but I just love old jet aircraft – simple + limited = fun

Absolutely. I suspect I may end up flying the F-84 more than the F-86 because it’ll be the workhorse ground attacker.

      Fingers crossed!

I’m particularly excited about the F-84 because I find myself less and less enthused about air to air battles but really enjoy the planning and execution of ground strikes. The F-84 just sounds like a lot of fun.

  3. I would buy a Vietnam War module if they were to make and release one one day. But I am aware that WWII is where the money is. And I guess WWII and Korean War flight simulators are a lot more interesting as you have a higher chance of getting into dogfights rather than letting beyond visual range missiles doing the job for you, agree?

But I think there is an area in the market for a Vietnam War module, and one that offers more aircraft with a highly detailed cockpit with automatically managed systems (no clickable cockpit) so the player can focus more on the actual mission rather than having to manage all these systems. Agree?

  4. Have they said anything about an integrated coop campaign capability this time around?

I don’t remember anything. That side of the new sim we still don’t know a lot about.

War thunder has this jet , you have only to pay 50 dolars for it and you can fly it, they even say that its very real to the life one. (Yes this was Ironic hahahah)

Hah! Yeah, that feels steep for what they offer. Yikes! This one should be a more robust experience.

  6. The F-84 is just more interesting to me. Ground slugger yes, but also just not as well covered and more “transitional” I suppose is the best way to put it. It feels more old school (no swept wings) It was only less than 2 years earlier, but definitely shows its WW 2 roots more than the F-86, esp the F-86F we have in game. Just something different to what we have. Also very usable in Cold War scenarios, esp in Europe for which we have lots of maps now.

    1. I think F9F with 4x20mm will be more popular for GA, it will also to cary bombs and rockets maybe even bigger rockets like tiny tim, and it had stronger fraim

That should be a fun one to fly as well. Quite an aircraft with a lot of capability.

  7. I should say “F-86F in DCS” or the F_86A in Il-2. I play both, and this sort of made me wonder if Il-2 would continue to move into the Cold War… Vietnam, Europe, etc.
