Matt Wagner is back with another DCS World update video. This one isn’t focused that much on aircraft but rather on the Afghanistan map and the dynamic campaign.

Afghanistan map update

The first part of the update is focused on DCS: Afghanistan. The map has seen a few significant updates since release and another is in the works. Matt reports that the map will see updates that improve surface textures, normal maps, and includes colour corrections, changes to types of ground materials and improved vegetation.

Airports, heliports, forward operating bases, roads, and cities have all reportedly seen improvements too. They’ve also added new points of interest and unique structures to different parts of the map. It sounds like a significant improvement on the map overall.

There’s also a little bit of a teaser of the ground-based walkaround mode for the DCS: C-130. You can see the icon show up and the user interact with one of the rear access doors.

One last point, I’ve seen quite a few comments on social media channels about this update talking about Afghanistan and wondering about the Iraq map. That one also appears to be getting a similar update soon.

Dynamic campaign update

Matt also has provided a short update on dynamic campaign. It is the signature feature that many DCS World fans are hoping to see and its development process has been lengthy. As with previous updates, Matt has talked about some of the systems they are developing to make the campaign work.

Some of those systems mentioned this time around include ground forces management. Movement, target selection, and the order of battle are all part of the package now. A more complex project than initially planned for. Similarly, aerial operations can now combine flights into a larger package.

Matt does mention that the programmers interface that they’ve been using up to now is slowly being integrated into the final interface. That does sound like a key milestone in the development of this system. That said, I still don’t think we’re going to see dynamic campaign coming any time soon but it is still good to hear about updates and about core functionality that is being developed.

When they release a Dynamic Campaign in DCS, I may give it a try .. I’m not a fan of DCS because it’s a pretty dead world. You take 6 months to learn a module, play one or two campaigns available, and there’s nothing to do unless you wanna fly around doing some random shooting. This is where IL2 shines for me. This immersion you have is just mind-blowing.

    1. I partially agree with you in the sense that DCS has dug itself into a hole where almost all of its aircraft are full fidelity and very complex to learn how to fly and fight in. And that is where IL-2 comes into the market by offering something nice and easier yet more immersive in terms of gameplay than DCS (in my opinion).

It also seems that DCS is lacking a lot of aircraft from not only the modern era, but also from WWII and the Cold War era as well. Even though it would be fair to say we might never come close to having the same amount of aircraft as War Thunder or IL-2, I think it is warrented to say these maps need at least some of the most vital aircraft that were historically a common site there. For one example, for the Channel Map we need aircraft like the Bf-109 E-4, Bf-109 F-4, Bf-109 G-2 and G-6, the Fw-190 A-3, A-4, A-5 and A-6, Hurricane Mk.I and II, Spitfire Mk.I, II and V, Typhoon Mk.I the P-47 D-22 Razorback and the P-51B/C. The could do heavier aircraft or leave them to just be controlled by heavier aircraft. And for Iraq, the sim needs aircraft like the MiG-21MF, MiG-23BN, MiG-29A, Su-22M, Su-24MK and the Su-25K for the Iraqi Air Force, and for the West, the Tornado, Jaguar, Mirage 2000C and F-15C I think is whats relivant (to be fair, a couple of what I’ve listed are coming to DCS as modules). As for maps I think the game needs a late war Eastern Front map like Berlin, which would work perfectly for the Bf-109 K-4, Fw-190 A-8 and the La-7. The game is also in need for a 1950s and modern era Korean Peninsula map for the F-86 Sabre and the MiG-15, as well as a 1960s and modern day Indochina map (if you know about the Thai – Cambodian Border Conflict, you would understand why we would need a modern day version of Indo-China) for the various Cold War aircraft that fought in the Second Indochina War (Vietnamese-American War) (sorry, I don’t wish to get political).

      1. I like the idea of a Berlin or eastern Germany map for the late war fighters, even a small one.

      2. With a deliberately disciplined rhythm on buying DCS modules, I find DCS to be more immersive than IL-2. Sitting on those modern jets virtual cockpits with so much options on how to do things and manage still is quite amazing.

Those are my top 2 combat sims, though. Love’em.

People often miss out on every module potential by binge shopping and quitting using the modules once they learnt to do the basics. That I think is a huge trap. The true fun starts on new missions either from dynamic campaigns 3rd party apps, or other dynamic situations you find yourself in.

    2. I dont think it takes 6months to learn dcs wwii module .

and question , do IL2 has dynamic campaign out of the box ? or is it also only some static campaigns ? and how many campaigns one gets out of the box for single airframe in IL2 ?

      asking for a friend…

      1. hey, Col Ninny here. Il-2 has several high end dynamic campaigns developed by community groups.they are all outdtanding. I provide many youtube tutorials. Check out the Combat Box Appolo, and Tactical Air War content. The best immersion with some excellent pilots.

Yep that’s an excellent point! IL-2 multiplayer servers have done great work with dynamic multiplayer campaign experiences with a lot of persistence between mission updates.

      3. IL-2 doesn’t have a dynamic campaign. It has a career campaign where it simulates you being a pilot of a squadron and options for perma death.

All stages of a campaign are pre defined, you cannot change the course of anything.

I like it, but it is not a dynamic campaign. It is a great survival type of experience with a few dynamic elements such as squadron plane replenishment and mixed variants, though. IL-2 Korea will introduce resources mechanics to the Career.

    3. Nothing wrong at not vibing with DCS or not having the DCS “speed”, but you can learn a module in way less than 6 months.

For things to do: Retribution Dynamic Campaigns and Briefing Room mission generator are a couple of friends to help.
Also you can have the Through the Inferno dynamic sandbox full of missions inside a single mission file for a “quick shooting” session. It feels like a multiplayer session full of AI, very lively. 😀

It did not. I’ve posted the sentence with the word soon at the end for better clarity. It sounds like they will be bouncing many of these underlying tech updates between both maps as time goes on.

      1. Iraq map needs some love on those vegetation autogen patches on the ground.

I don’t have Afghanistan (yet) and this patch notes were a mix of frustration and just a bit of excitement.

It definitely does. I don’t have Iraq but do have Afghanistan. It’s good to see the one map but of course we want both to be updated. Each map seems to leapfrog the other at times but I’m almost certain we’ll see this come to Iraq shortly.

  3. Always happy to see any map get some love. And this looks good. Might be some A-10 Afghan action tonight. With a beer of course. 🙂
