Coming in at the 107th anniversary of the end of World War I, Flying Circus has received a large new update adding new features. The company has also bundled all prior releases into a new deluxe edition. Let’s have a look.

New features

The headline feature is the addition of the German Zeppelin-class R airship. This is a large combat oriented airship with payload and defensive armament. It should be a tough target to tackle.

The airship addition is the culmination of fan requests and developer effort that goes back more than a decade. I’m sure it will be welcome and I’m waiting to see my first video of someone trying to land on one. Meanwhile, new missions have been added defending and attacking Zeppelins.

They’ve also added new cities to the Western Front map. Mons, Namur, Aachen, Verviers, Maastricht, Brussels, Charleroi, and others have reportedly been added. As have new landmarks in Paris, new rail stations across the map and other various updates.

Current FC owners will get all of this for free so it’s not a new content purchase.

New deluxe edition

It’s interesting to see but a new bundle has appeared offering the entire Flying Circus package, volumes one through four, in a single purchase. The price is a slightly eye watering $249.00 USD though that does come in at a slight discount if you were to line up and purchase each volume individually.

This obviously isn’t aimed at current owners who likely have one or more volumes. If you’re new to the series and are looking at a combined purchase this may be of interest. Is the deluxe edition of interest to you? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Check it out in the store here and on Steam here.

Great Battles updates

A few updates have snuck in there for Great Battles WWII fans as well. The Bf109E-4 has a new DB-601Aa engine with increased sea level power but reduced altitude performance. The Me410’s emergency mode has been increased to 3-minutes from the original 1-minute thanks to new documentation. The Il-2 Model 1943 has seen some updates with new cockpit switch sounds and stability and controllability updates thanks to work being done for the Model 1944. A new scenario mission for the Yak-1 Series 23 has been added to the Odessa map.

Not a bad update. Read the full news report here!

  2. Had some VR issues but seem to have been sorted (well, DCS is working) so am looking fwd to this update.

Back when I used to be in an online squadron, one of our favourite stupid things to do was split into 2 teams, each take a TB-3 with as many gunner spots filled as we had pilots, and have a dual to the death. Usually, by this point, we had all probably had quite a lot to drink and the end was almost always a collision. Hilarious fun.

I suspect the Zeppelin will encourage the same kind of mad-cap silliness.

    1. I did one of those TB-3 fights one time! That was ridiculous fun.

    1. I wonder what the discount will be during the winter sale. That will probably start on December 24th.

  4. Despite the extreme pricing now, it makes sense to bundle it now given their heavily discounted sales. Once Korea releases, the GB series will probably have big sales as it becomes a legacy product, allowing people to buy such a huge planeset at once hopefully means multiplayer gets used more. Then maybe servers can be more confident on restriction certain plane sets to certain years.

    1. That’s kind of my expectation too: do a big 75% off discount, and then you’re looking at a complete WWI sim for ~$60 which is a lot more palatable.

I’d also argue it is one of the best all around VR experiences for general VR users.

  5. Note that they rushed the release to be on armistice day. This is why there is no Zeppelin mission, no Zeppelin support for the quick missions and some AI bugs. They will fix/add this in the next release.

    1. I haven’t had a chance to check anything out yet but I do wish they hadn’t rushed it. Hopefully the fixes are coming in soon.
