1C Game Studios Korea IL-2 Series begins pre-orders as the product gets a new release date window. We’ve also got pricing and a hint of what is planned in the future.

Pre-orders begin

A new cinematic video has just been released advertising the pre-order.

Korea IL-2 series has some significant new information coming out today. First, there’s a new pre-rendered trailer (above) that reminds me of the original IL-2 Battle of Stalingrad trailer that came out back in 2013. The trailer is not gameplay footage but it is representative of the type of battles that they want to showcase.

The trailer marks the start of the pre-order period as well with the company offering two options at the current point in time. The prices are higher than I expected and provide a bit of sticker shock at first. Having recovered a bit, there’s some interesting things going on here that are a little different from the Great Battles Series so let’s break down the features listed for both options.

Two pre-order options are available.

There are two options on offer. The initial pre-order offering is $99.99 USD regular price and $79.99 USD pre-order price. In the features this is being called standard edition, though it includes two collector planes so its possible that a third cheaper edition may be on offer at some point. The “Founder’s Edition” takes the place of the old Premium edition and it comes with the same features plus the first DLC package that is intended to come after the initial release. That is $179.99 USD regularly though its $139.99 USD as part of the initial pre-order.

Standard

  • 2 Collector Planes (F-84E Thunderjet and La-11)
  • 6 legendary early Cold War aircraft to fly – F-86A Sabre, MiG-15bis, F-51D Mustang, Yak-9P, F-80C-10 Shooting Star and IL-10
  • Unique Aerobatic Team Liveries for MiG-15, F-86 Sabre, and F-84 Thunderjet
  • Unique Liveries for La-5s and P-51D that will unlock in Great Battles for customers who own these aircraft immediately after placing the pre-order
  • Huge Map of the Korean Peninsula in 1950s
  • Interactive Museum Mode
  • Commander Career
  • Quick Mission Builder
  • Custom Single-Player Missions
  • Scripted Campaign Support
  • Multiplayer Mode

Premium / Founder’s

  • 2026 DLC (5 yet undisclosed aircraft, their unique liveries and a new layer of interaction with the game world)
  • 2 Collector Planes (F-84E Thunderjet and La-11)

We don’t yet have official confirmation of what the 2026 DLC is. The announcement is somewhat vague mentioning a “new layer of interaction with the game world. ”

Comments by the developers have suggested that its a naval aviation focused add-on and we’ve seen UI mock-ups or development art for the F4U Corsair and F9F Panther. There’s also been an effort to dig up resources on Commonwealth units with types like the Meteor and Sea Fury having seen combat during the war so they may also comprise some of the mystery offerings.

Finally, the latest information we have on a release date has been provided to us by the announcement threads on social media and the forums.

We’re glad to announce that our giant project is approaching its conclusion: the Early Access is scheduled for Spring 2026, and the official release for Q2 2026.

The newly revamped IL-2 series website is where you’ll find all of this information and more so you’ll want to venture over there to see more.

On pricing and content

Putting my editorial hat on, this pre-order comes in at an interesting time. Though likely timed to coincide with holiday spending (people tend to spend more in the run-up to the holidays and then are more careful in the new year as the bills come in), the pre-order does lack a bit of the content that I was hoping to see.

Originally, the goal was for release in 2025 and this announcement confirms that the date has indeed slipped into 2026. That part doesn’t really phase me all that much. Wait for enough games and simulation products over the years and you know that, despite best guesses, release dates nearly always slip. No problem there. What is a bit more challenging is that we have yet to see any really dedicated gameplay videos yet.

I think the thing that will move the needle for veteran simmers is when we see a video featuring setup, mission start, takeoff, cruise, combat, flying home and landing the airplane. If that really impresses, then folks will be interested in putting down money. I had kind of hoped that we’d see more of that by now.

Then there’s the pricing. Costs have gone up and pricing for content looks to be higher than it was in the past. Standard edition is where Premium edition was before and the new Premium edition, though admittedly coming with a fair bit of extra content over the old Premium edition, is quite high. Again, I think if we knew exactly what was in there and the value was on display then it’d be an easier one to justify. Without that, it feels pricey for something that is still a bit nebulous.

There’s a fair bit of healthy skepticism required here. I was similarly cautious at first with the, then new, Battle of Stalingrad but that was replaced with enthusiasm as content released and the shape of the series beyond its initial goals took form. That may happen here too but I wish we had something just a little more tangible on both the way that the sim is going to fly and then what the future DLC content is going to be. Then I’ll be more enthused.

Curious to know your thoughts in the comments! I’m sure it’ll be vibrant but please keep it on topic.

  2. ill wait for 6 airplane version for 50$ or so, F-84 and La-11 are not what i need from Korea game. That 179.99 is crazy, for 5 extra airpanes 80$, no thanks. And if its better version of F-86 in it, now thats gona be tilting.

Carriers would help justify the experience (and maybe the price). A jeep is neat but not a major selling point to me.

I get the whole we want to reveal things in time sort of thing but when money is on the table they really need to reveal the plan. Let’s hope that they clear this up officially soon.

      4. I found the entire release rather weird. I had expected a major blitz of information and a big video with in-game footage, but we got a tiny video and nothing else.

They seemed to have rushed to get those holiday sales.

    1. Pre order discounts at this size is a big no. Yikes at those prices too. I’m crazy to fly these planes but not this crazy as this values in my currency are a fortune.

I’ll wait will mid 2026 or late 2026 discounts if it comes much earlier than that.

    3. Meh – you really have to de-couple here. NOTHING you do in re a video game purchase moves the needle in the slightest.

and remember, the Ukrainian govt has plenty of legitimacy problems of their own (note the corruption resignation just this week)

in sum, it’s a video game, not geopolitics. If you care about Ru vs Ukr, spend your time writing to your congress critters – it’ll be more productive.

      1. Not to start a UK/Ru debate, but yeah clearly, any amount of corruption will justify your country being invaded/destroyed… And if I can’t move the needle, why do anything moral? Why pay my taxes as the amount I’m paying unfortunately doesn’t move the needle much. Why do anything since I can’t move any needle in a meaningful way. Duh.

Nothing meaningful. Gaming is not particularly profitable and the taxes are going to be minimal compared to the income from natural resources.

  6. I’m in no rush for any more IL2 products. And certainly not for the prices announced. $140US on a pre-order for an unseen unreviewed product? That’s a $200Cdn bet that it won’t be a buggy flying lemon.

Not sure what they’re thinking with this. Sorry, but no thanks.

    1. I, too, am not going to pre order with the scant information we have now.

BUT, I’m genuinely optimistic based on the BoX series AND the advancements in the new game engine shared so far.

if they’d show some game play, and some YouTuber evaluations, I’d be able to get closer to spending money.

  8. I don’t think the pricing is a problem. You pay this money for two aircraft in dcs sometimes. I think the pricing is reasonable. In fact I wonder how they will even make a profit at that price point and the time it has taken in development. The struggle for me is whether I should give money to a Russian company.

    1. There is a lot at play with them financially. Clearly, they were able to make ends meet previously with the pricing models for GB. The real concern is why they want our money before showing anything about the game. Some might say needing cash like is often attributed to DCS. I would gander it has more to do with the product than need cash. I think they realize it is not a great product as is and want to cash in early with the hype of the B29 taking front and center. I think their concern is when people see the game they won’t buy as it’s not a big enough evolution from GB and not many are interested in Korea.

  9. Since we’ve not seen actual gameplay and from the renders we’ve seen I’m in no rush for this title. I’ll wait for a year or so until there are some decent reviews and the bugs have been worked out. I honestly feel that this will be BOX all over again and it took years to get that to its present state.

  10. Over the years the IL2 folks have amazed me with their products. Yeah, the price has gone up but so has everything else and today $140 is pocket change. I’m amused at folks paying 3K for a graphics card complaining about these numbers. Anyway Il2 hasn’t disappointed me yet so I just ordered the founders addition.

Retired major airline pilot also got to play games in Southeast Asia 1969-70

    1. who is paying 3k for graphic cards lol i doubt most sim flyers do. I have 300$ one and dont bather to buy new one with AI and datacenters raising the prices each day, and not to talk about RAM skyrocketing now in price because of them also. Thing is i do not se big step forward from GB in Korea, So is same with extra logistic no one asked for, why not dynamic campaign, Mulltiplayer is same, no loby or in game voice, mission editor is same ( thats big one to not make more user frendly ), AI interaction with player and wingman is unknown, they didnt even show in game DFs or cockpit and so on… 5 mistery airplanes when after Jason left they said that they gona ask peoples money when they have something to show for it… its all just same as before with not that big differance from what we see. Ill just wait to here players reactions to gameplay. If its 2-3 DLC in game ok i already know what game is, but this is new game on upgraded engine, untested by players, ill just wait and see, save 20-30$ on start is not big incentive for now.

    2. Also i had no problem buying O&L when they anounced it for GB for 60$ early access as its known what we are getting, it for GB that is almost bug free and i know what to expect. And i get airplanes and one map from start. But you get 8 airplanes and 2 maps, here you would have to pay 80$ extra for 5 airplanes we dont know and no map and in year+ from now you can play it.

  11. I’m excited by the idea of a new flight sim set in Korea, (wish I’d never lost my copy of Mig Alley). But I want to see more of the single player side of things after the rubbish that was Il2 Great Battles ‘career mode’, even if they did, eventually fix it.

    1. From what i see its gona be same but youll have to be tasked to worry about logistics of war, why would that be interesting to fighter pilot, they will have to how more about it

  12. I think in this day and age it bears NO sense to be as vague about what people will actually GET with each package, bearing in mind the massive outlay for it (comparitive to what the cost has been for theatres and planes etc. in the past).
As you so rightly say, it’s the ‘lead up’ where people part with their money and NOT the ‘aftermath’. There’s not a lot of convincing to get folks to part with their money, just given fairly ambiguous promotion. Ambiguity doesn’t equal spending, it’s like betting on a horse that MIGHT run!!
    Cheers GS.

  13. I’m fine with the price as long as it’s good.

    But…

I have a *very* short list of devs whose content I will buy site unseen from and these guys are not on it.

I have no problem waiting for the reviews first. (I still have all of GB/FC to play yet anyway, sigh.)

  14. I cant justify that size spend on another sim, I have near all of IL2 products, I have a 95% collection of DCS modules and terrains and MSFS24 is also massive. Where would I have the time vs investment. I might buy the basic on a later sale, but for now its a pass.

  16. Weird there’s no mention of the Exciting Drone Racing part of the game the Devs were definitely doing loads of work on… No money from me for these jokers, I’m afraid. I’ve been flying il2 for 25 years. But they lost the room a while ago. There is no moral argument for buying this game.

  17. The more expensive version basically just means that you also pre-order the DLC. The way they phrase it, it seems like there is no extra discount for doing this.

So my plan is to get the standard version. I see little point to take extra risk for no benefit.

  18. Well…

MSFS 2024 costs $70 for the base version, then $100 for a few more planes and custom airports, etc.

so I think the base price is high, but reasonable if everything works as advertised.

but more than double for the Premium…? Seems crazy unless it’s truly something special and significant.

  19. I’ll buy it. I’ve been waiting a long time for a Korean War combat flight simulation game.

  20. The price at first comes across as steep but when you add all these things up over years I’ve spent more than that on flight sims (and for us with the exchange rate its about $212).

But as others have said – the lack of in game footage in the trailer and the limited in game footage in the briefing room updates means I’m still on the fence with this one. I’ve pointed out many times that the cockpit images look awesome but they are renders, I really want to get a sense of what its going to look like.

So I’ll hold back for the time being – I’m interested in the theater, so its just a matter of peeling back more about it first.

    1. i just check whats price for russians, its 4000 ruble ( 51USD ) and expencive version is 5000 ruble ( 64USD) , so they are counting on west markets to buy in, imagine paying 140$ for something that is worth 60

      1. yeah that’s a little hard to swallow isn’t it…

      2. This is just the classic economic model of charging different prices for different groups. Like charging less for people who are 65+.

These prices are scaled to the local incomes, since salaries are very different per country. I did a Purchasing Power Parity calculation and based on that, the price in Russia for the Founder’s edition should actually be 4069 rubles (52 USD). And the standard version should be 2325 rubles (30 USD). So it is actually more expensive for them than for an American, relative to their salary levels.

Note that it is a mistake to see software as having a specific worth. Ultimately, the developers need to earn enough to pay for development plus some profit. The higher income from high-income countries and the lower income from lower-income countries all just ends up on a single pile and that needs to be enough money. They could not afford to only charge low prices to everyone, because then the pile of money would be insufficient. But if they would only charge higher prices, then almost no one would be able to afford it in low-income countries.

  21. It amazes me that people pay $50+ per airplane in DCS (for 1 aircraft) and complain about the price of IL2.  Korea and DLC for $140 (early access) seem like a great deal to me.  Instead of maybe 2 aircraft and a map with no missions or campaign in DCS you get 13 aircraft, a map and campaign in IL2.  Sure, IL2 has no clickable cockpits but I do not care that is what my HOTAS is for.  I have been flying IL2 since it first came out and have never been cheated in any way and now all the sudden, they are going to deliver junk and rip people off – come on get real.  Finally, Putin gets no benefit from the sales of a tiny company that is based in Eastern Europe.

  23. The pricing is fair for the type of (fairly niche) product and games in general are routinely coming out at $70+ now.

It all looks great, and I’d dearly love to play it, but while the conflict in Ukraine goes on I cannot in good conscience support any company connected to Russia.

  24. Thanks, as usual, for your review and assessment.

That was a hilariously bad comms effort. Do they actually think?

“Here is a short video that has nothing to do with actual in-game rendering that might persuade you to pay quite a lot of money for something that might be around next summer – (covering a war about which noone really cares / indeed remembers) – or even more money for the above with some mystery aircraft. Yours sincerely, from a company in a country currently undertaking an unprovoked genocidal war. Thanks. Please send money to this account”
