It’s Friday and the DCS World Weekend news update is here. This week its hotfixes for the DCS: C-130J, new feature additions, plus updates coming for Marianas WWII and VIAF (Virtual International Airshow) is running this weekend as well. Check it out!

C-130 hotfixes, new features

DCS World saw a hotfix earlier in the week aimed at addressing the DCS: C-130’s crashing issues that some players were experiencing. The issues stem from a variety of causes including having ray tracing on (which is apparently now fixed) as well as from the use of the MOAB and several other features. Its not for every user but it looks like the hotfix has sorted out most of the crashing related issues. The fix also brings in new missions, new liveries, and added new usability to the EFB.

The change log is available here.

Marianas WWII update and VIAF

Marianas WWII may be out but Eagle Dynamics are still working on refining the details. One of the big changes coming is focused on Pagan airstrip. The team have worked from modern data and then gone backwards in time to recreate the island as it was in WWII. Some things have changed and a volcanic eruption on May 15, 1981 covered the airstrip. The revised version reflects the state of the strip prior to that eruption.

Since the vector data for our maps is based on modern information, events like this can be overlooked when creating on a historical map. However, some observant customers quickly pointed out this event and its impact on the Pagan airstrip. Armed with this knowledge, we conducted an in-depth investigation using imagery from the 1940s and discovered that the Allies had extensively photographed the island. We located these high-quality surveillance images of the airfield and its surroundings, allowing us to accurately recreate the airfield as it appeared nearly 40 years before the volcanic event.

I appreciate that new data has come to light and changes have been made. History goes beyond just the aircraft and even involves volcanism when it comes to creating accurate historical maps.

The DCS news update also mentions the upcoming VIAF (Virtual International Airshow) happening this week on Twitch.Tv.

  1. Only had one crash with the C-130, when turning on raytracing to high the first time. Other than that the plane works perfectly. And it’s great fun!

    1. Yeah I’ve had no problems so far though I’ve only just flown it a few times so far. Too much work, not enough sim time!

  2. Unfortunatelly multiple crashes when flying with Quest3 in VR.

PRogram freezes and only a hourglass is moving, need to shut down hard via Task manager.
Not every flight – but 40-50% of the time does it happen.
Can happen during checklists, but also a bit into a flight 😦

    1. That’s very frustrating no doubt.

Ray tracing off? That seems to be the worst offender for crashing.

  3. Almost zero time in the Herc so far. Too much other stuff going on to sit down and give it the attention it requires. So for now, I stick with the stuff I already know. But I’ll get there – it’s too interesting to ignore! 🙂

SO GLAD they went back and re-did Pagan. It shows commitment to accuracy.

I do wish they’d take a stab at improving the Caucasus, tho. At least the elevation mesh so we could have the same impressive quality of mountains as in Afghanistan, et al.

    1. I would also like to see a remade from scratch Caucasus map.

  4. One thing I would also like to see for DCS is a Persian Gulf map expanded to include all of the Gulf such as Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Northeastern Saudi Arabia and South Central Iran. I know they are restrained by a budget of some sort but I have heard that the Gulf map is very popular in terms of hosting multiplayer servers. Just a thought of mine.

Development has stoped on that one. Also it seems Ugra is the one most likely to extend maps. ED rarely does and the current PG is much larger than originally setup.

      2. Do you think a map of the entirety of the Middle East will be possible for DCS (if it isn’t already now), or does the platform have its own limitations?
