A few more details are coming out about Korea IL-2 series as the title moves towards release in 2026. The latest developer diary, number 56, is focused on people who will walk around in the villages and cities of the new sim. Let’s have a look.

Inhabiting the world

The latest developer diary is focused on people. The diary mentions that there are 28 characters that range from townspeople to soldiers, sailors, and technicians but it is the former, the townspeople, who make up the bulk of the images in this latest update.

The people are reportedly programmed to have behaviours that include walking, working, and talking with other nearby people. If an explosion occurs nearby, they will also reportedly dive and scatter. This all at a reportedly minimal cost to performance.

I had mentioned previously that I wanted to see what the mud moving experience was like and it looks like there will be some key differences in how “lived in” the simulated world will be.

No word on just how interactive these people will be with the various munitions in the series.

I know some people have brought up concerns over civilian casualties. The series has, to date, maintained a Teen rating under the ESRB system or under the PEGI 12 or PEGI 16 under that rating. A shift to a more mature rating, should it happen, could affect sales in some countries.

Read more about what they have planned here.

Big winter sale

Meanwhile, the rest of the Sturmovik series is going on sale with up to 80% discounts on the webstore and on Steam.

  1. I admit to finding the whole concept of morality in a combat flight sim to be amusing. I know some people get mad about shooting others in parachutes, and there is the notion of civilian casualties being a bad thing. Meanwhile we’re all dropped more virtual tonnage of Kaboom! in our play time than any city soaked up in WWII.

But then I don’t like the idea of churches and mosques getting hit in DCS, so I’m in the club in my own way.

    1. There’s quite a range within the community as there is on virtually any subject. Some folks want to drop atomic bombs on cities and other folks don’t like the idea of civilian targets being present.

I think there’s opportunity to learn some history. The comments I read prompted me to do a little reading on the subject. Wikipedia, citing a number of articles on the matter, suggests somewhere between 1.6 and 3 million civilian casualties. Sobering reminder that real world conflicts often hit civilian populations hard.

As for the pixels in a flight sim, there its more of a ratings issue. I still remember the old days of titles like Command & Conquer changing blood to oil and suggesting the soldiers were androids in some countries. Times change but old debates continue on.

  2. I can’t believe that there are people worried about civvy casualties in a game that is all about war and death… the dev’s are obviously not concerned otherwise they would not be including civilian pixels that could be potential targets.

And let’s face it, most players would be up in arms if they didn’t include napalm as that feature has been demanded and it will be included.

If there are enemy forces firing at you from inside a village (with civvy pixels in the mix) you can bet players will be plastering that area with bombs, napalm and MG and cannon fire… strewth, it’s a game for god’s sake.

    1. It’s an age old topic though I think from a ratings perspective its something that the devs will have to contend with. It may be a non issue entirely, but I do see folks debating it so worth the mention.

Remember this being more of a topic in the 1990s than in the 2020s.

  3. I think this morality debate in combat flight sims are actually over time ago. All is designed and focused for military active targets. There is not carpet bombing missions against cities or operations like Clarion. Houses and buses have not reward, you can’t choose them as targets in the editor. Even with militaries is enought disabling the vehicle to get the kill without needing to kill the crew.

Things like civilian traffic, fishing boats, people… all is a plus. Its purpose is to make the experience more inmersive, become the scenery a living world. We shouldn’t put it in question because someone could use them as a easy target, this guy is targeting parachutes and lifeboats today. It has no sense worrying about that.

    1. They’ve certainly skewed in that direction either for computer resource or art concerns or maybe for ratings. I do think expanding the world and giving it more life is a net positive!

  4. people, no people blood, no blood its not as important as how city/village and terrain looks, its not big step forward from GB its basically same thing, roads like they are glued to map and textures like from old games

    1. I was more busy looking at the new assets, buildings and such, that do look like they’ve gotten quite a bit better than before. The roads I feel are a little better than before though it still does have that glued on appearance at times.

I’m not sure if any sim I’ve flown recently has ever fully sorted that out. Any sims that you think are doing it much better?

  5. Maybe its just me – but I’m more concerned that there’s only one colored skirt option avaliabile for the villager 🤪
