One of those moments where veterans of the combat flight sim community will want to raise a glass and toast a service coming to an end after a very long run. Jiri, the author of HyperLobby, has announced that the service’s website and its associated services will be shut down in the the next couple of months.

Celebrating and mourning the end of a pillar of the community

HyperLobby, started up 26-years ago by community member Jiri, helped fill a void in the community for a reliable service that could track available IL-2 Sturmovik multiplayer servers. Alternatives did exist but HyperLobby was the community’s clear and most popular favourite hosting a list of accessible multiplayer servers and providing a chat room for people to organize and play together.

This website and all associated services will be shutdown within one or two months. Thanks to everyone you helped me building this site for last 26 years …

Jiri, Hyperfighter.SK

I myself took part in many of the Friday night co-op sessions, flew on the Battlefields UK server, participated in a co-op TB-3 fight session, and many other scenarios and experiences that were all organized and made possible by HyperLobby.

The service has, at this point, outlived its useful life with more modern sims having their own server browsers and lobbies in some cases. Still, the service remains a fond memory for me and many others.

Here’s to Jiri, to HyperLobby, and a pillar of the community that is now being retired. A hearty S!

  1. Oh this is a sad day for me. I cut my virtual combat flight sim teeth in hyperlobby from the original IL-2 through to 1946. I have so many fond memories of near escapes, desperate action and shenanigans because of that utterly rock solid piece of software.

I can still hear the props turn over and the engines start up when you click to enter a game. Days like this make me feel old.

I feel the same! I can’t believe how long ago that was. Very fond memories supported by this software.

  2. Does this mean the multiplayer days of IL-2 1946 are over?

I had a lot of fun with this over the years…

Good question! I haven’t played on a server in ages, but hyperlobby was my way in when I did. I had some memorable dogfights in IL-2.

maybe mission4today might have some ideas for multiplayer IL-2 1946.

  3. I discovered IL-2 and Hyperlobby in 2003 and spent nearly every night flying with my squad until 2009. It was a special environment, both for the gameplay and the social bonds we formed.

    Thanks for the memories, Jiri!

I joined around the same time! Had lots of time flying on the many servers back then.

  4. Crazy it has been so long! I recognize some of those names in the screenshots. Still know some of them. Flew mostly F-15 and F/A-18! Nostalgia.

Yeah, its definitely sad to see it go too. Definitely hits in the nostalgia department.

On the other hand, the purpose it intended to serve has more or less moved on. It was an incredible thing back in the day!
