Feast or famine sometimes with flight sim news and right now we’re feasting on yet another development update from DCS World third party developer Heatblur Simulations. We’ve got an update on how things are going with the F-14B(U). Let’s have a look!

A more advanced Tomcat

One of the longstanding requests from some sectors of the DCS World community has been for a more modern F-14. The advanced F-14D model has often been asked for as the most recognizable upgrade to the F-14A and B models that we currently have available to us. While the D model is reportedly out of reach for lack of information on some of its systems and capabilities, a modernized B model (upgraded if you will) has been something that Heatblur has been cooking up for a while now. This variant will place the Tomcat into the early 2000s for capability putting it alongside many of the other released modules for the sim.

According to the latest update, features like the new HUD have been implemented which brings in an integrated RWR, multiple target designators, detailed target and navigation data and higher refresh rates. The navigation system is also reportedly modernized with CDNU (Controls and Displays Navigation Unit) and EGI embedding GPS and INS.

The RIO isn’t left out of this. A new gets the PTID (Programmable Tactical Information Display) is a new high definition display replacing the old radar scope.

Heatblur also confirm new weapons will be available including JDAMs.

More details will be forthcoming but the update will also be a moment where features, like Jester 2.0, come over from the F-4E Phantom. Here’s a little more on that:

Features such as the in-game browser, interactive kneeboards, interactive manual (with explain-me-switch feature), and more will be coming to both DCS F-14A/B and the B(U). We will of course be teaching JESTER to use the new systems as well, and after the release of the B(U), we plan on making QoL improvements to JESTER in both Tomcats, though this may largely depend on feasibility. Working on an upgrade product in this way affords us a unique opportunity to spend more time than otherwise possible on bringing across new features and making sure the entire eventual F-14 product family remains one of your favourite flight simulation experiences.

That all sounds pretty compelling. I’m a particularly big fan of being able to reference the manual, mid-flight, with a contextual button bringing up the exact thing I’m pointing at in the cockpit.
