A bunch of news items this week for DCS World. There’s a new Lunar themed sale, an update on how progress is being made for both Iraq north and south, and Matt Wagner goes on HIP games and talks all things DCS. A few interesting items to learn from there.

Modules go on sale

We’re coming up to the Chinese New Year and that means…. DCS sales! The Lunar Sale is now on and it comes with the usual slew of 50% off modules including some popular jets like the F-16C, F/A-18, A-10C, F-86, MiG-15bis, and others.

Iraq map update

The DCS: Iraq North (one half of the Iraq map) is the focus of the latest developer update. Airports are getting refinements, improved details, and better integration with the surrounding terrain. The airports getting the update are: Al-Kut, Al-Taji, Al-Asad, Al-Sahra, Al-Salam, Al-Taquddum, Qayyarah, Kirkuk, Sulaimaniyah, Balad, Mosul, H2, H3, and K-1.

The map is getting new points of interest too. Erbil Martyrs Monument, the Qayyarah Control Tower, the Al-Rahman Mosque, the Al-Asad Fire Station these together with new infrastructure like dams are helping to fill out the details around the map. They also add strategic and tactical objectives for missions and campaigns.

Meanwhile, DCS: Iraq South is now getting a lot of development focus with Eagle Dynamics reporting work on all parts of the map.

HIP Games interviews Matt Wagner

Matt Wagner has appeared on a Q&A with HIP Games covering a wide variety of topics from dynamic campaign to the sandbox nature of DCS World.

We’ve learned more about Vulcan and the transition away from Direct X where Matt says they don’t expect significant performance gains initially but that the shift to the technology opens the doors to technologies like frame gen which will improve performance.

Of note, Matt says that they are investigating methods that will bring unsupported 3rd party modules (I’d read that primarily as RAZBAM) along with the Vulcan engine update.

There’s much more so watch the video or visit r/Hoggit where a good TL;DR has been done.

And of course, visit the DCS World forums for the latest DCS World Weekend News.

  1. MSFS 2024 is on dx and supports FSR and new dlss, dont see any reason to swicth to vulkan.

    1. They are interested in getting DCS into multi-platform – I’m guessing Linux. So that makes sense. X-Plane went Vulcan and that worked out really well overall for use on MacOS, Linux, etc.

The why for multi-platform may be more centered around their MCS software goals and customer requirements.

      1. Vulkan is not going to much to help that. I would guess they have code that relies on the windows file system as well as windows api’s that would need to be addressed not to mention authorization and UI elements.

      2. Well it does sound that this is much more than an API change (no small thing either) and multi platform is a stated goal in connection with Vulkan. The only conjecture on my part is what’s driving it (professional contracts).
