Launching our way into spring with some DCS World Weekend updates and a spring sale for a wide variety of modules – including a few firsts. Let’s check out the latest DCS World news from Eagle Dynamics.

Marianas maps are now complete

Eagle Dynamics are reporting that both the DCS: Marianas Islands and DCS: Marianas WWII maps are now feature complete. Both maps have been in development over the last several years and have made some significant progress especially in the last update.

The maps have been an interesting foray for Eagle Dynamics as they have both been released free of charge to the community while the content of the maps has been a new territory for the developers moving away from the traditional territory and into the Pacific region.

The update indicates that while all planned core technology is now complete, support and ongoing optimization is still planned as the sim around them evolve. Additional map development resources are now being moved into DCS: Iraq and Afghanistan maps.

Spring sale

We’ve moved into the spring season (at least for some of you, here its still trying to be winter) and Eagle Dynamics has kicked off their spring sale to match!

Some firsts with this sale: DCS: MiG-29, DCS: CH-47F and DCS: Afghanistan are all 30% off for the first time.

The sale continues on the E-Shop until April 5 at 15:00 GMT and until March 26 at 17:00 GMT on Steam.

    I guess it’s neither here nor there, but do the Marianas maps really need to be feature complete? Given they are part of the base game and free, seems they can be open ended. An update here, a test of new terrain features there.

    In any case, very nice maps.

      I can think of a few reasons they may want to communicate this. First, it does highlight some free content that they’ve been working on for a while. People who are new to the sim may be looking for value options while they decide if they want to spend more and free maps and free aircraft aren’t bad things to explore.

      The other piece is more for veterans of the community. I’ve seen complaints in the comments about the slow pace of Iraq and Afghanistan maps. It has been slow though I don’t think any more than other projects. So for what its worth, it does indicate that they aren’t plotting to do more here but more is going to go on there.

      They are very nice maps indeed!

    What map do you think Eagle Dynamics will cover after they have completed their Iraq map and Afghanistan map? I know I have brought this up before, but I think they need to upgrade and expand the Persian Gulf map, and I think it makes sense for several reasons.

    1. It is a popular DCS map already and a rework would be widely welcomed amongst the DCS community.
    2. It is the premier of modern day air combat theatre. So many types of missions can be generated that reflects real life.
    3. It complements every modern-day combat jet and helicopter in the game as a native map for their operations.
    4. It is a sandbox for both people vs people and people vs environment alike.
    5. It seems to be a logical business move for ED in terms of being less expensive than starting from scratch.
    6. It would future proof DCS into the 2030s.

    Sorry for bringing this up again, it’s just that I see a lot of potential for a Gulf Map 2.0.

    (Ps. I don’t want to get political here with what is going on currently – nobody should here and I respect that).

      Depending on technological constraints, I would guess that a south east Asia map (i.e. Vietnam) is a potential follow-up. I always saw these maps as a way to test out new technology and get a feel for maps with more dense foliage.

      They’ve said a few times that they aren’t plotting to expand DCS: Persian Gulf. That could change, but I don’t see it right now.
