A new update from Ugra Media confirms that DCS: Syria, one of DCS World’s best known scenery addons, is receiving a substantial addition. Let’s look at some of the details!

Seasons, new points of interest, extended

DCS: Syria surely holds the record for the most number of extensions and expansions to the scope of the original project. Ugra Media released the map years ago and have been steadily expanding and enhancing it over time. It has become one of the most popular maps for single and multiplayer.

The new additions? An extension of the map southwards to include all of Israel, the Gaza Strip, Tel Aviv, and Jerusalem. New spring, fall and winter seasonal variations are being added. Three new mountain dams and a nuclear power plant in Turkey are being added. There’s also refinements to the coastline, scenes for air defense systems,

The following airports and airfields are being added:

  • Nevatim Airbase
  • Hatzerim Airbase
  • Hatzerim Flight Academy
  • Teyman Airfield in Israel
  • Cukurova International Airport (Adana-Mersin) in Turkey
  • Zarqa and the H4 Emergency Strip in Jordan

And here is a look at the full scope of the updated map. Note how much further south the map now extends.

And in true Ugra Media fashion there are videos like this one.

  1. Did you know that nuclear reactors are so well protected from being destroyed from explosive projectiles because they are encased in concrete so thick?

  2. I don’t fly on this map very often. It’s not even in my top Three. Just personal geographic preference. But it would still be the first map I’d recommend to someone looking for “The DCS experience”. The quality, diversity of terrain, and bang for your buck are top notch.

Its definitely a bang for the buck map. I bought it early on and it seemed pretty good then and Ugra have kept on adding and updating. It’s also by far the most popular online so its a good bet for a lot of DCS players.

What’s your go to scenery these days?

      1. Kola, SA, and Iraq. I like some elbow room when I fly. But I like all the maps of course, they all have something to offer. And the Nevada map always brings me back. If I’m learning a new plane or system, the NTTR map is my test bed.

I do love flying around the valleys and fjords of Kola!

Even desert regions have seasonal variations. The one screenshot shows more green and more flowers in the valley and there’s snow capped mountains, particularly in Turkey. It’s more subtle than other regions but it’s nice to see a bit of variation.

Beeing from Germany and even having the very Building i live in on the CWG Map still that map is only my second favourite one. Nothing beats syria and learning about the new content is a big deal 🙂 If they continue like that sinai will become absolete.

Performance of CWG is bad, also it’s artificially greenish. Can’t find my house there, but I’m getting the idea. And I like flying a Mi-8 from the Brocken.

The performance for that map reminds me of DCS: Syria when it first came out. I had a lot of issues flying over it, especially online, but they managed to make it work great over time. I suspect CWG will have a similar evolution.

  5. Haven’t used it in a long time, not really a favorite but I’m glad to see they’re putting some much attention into it. For me even after buying most of the maps, the best maps are the free ones, Caucus and Marianas, although Marianas counts as two really now! That’s where I’m hoping for more future action with the WW 2 Pacific stuff coming out. Also for WW 2 is Normandy, which has really expanded a lot and blossomed too.

Syria, like Persian Gulf seems to be the favorite of a particular set of players (modern jets), just like Marianas and Normandy are good for other people (WW 2 players for example)

I just did a flight around the Marianas (modern version) last night and yeah its quite an impressive map to zoom around in. That it and the WWII version are free hopefully will help spur more adoption, particularly whenever the Pacific assets arrive in greater numbers.

Ugra does seem to have a solid lock on WWII, Cold War, and Modern Era maps. Good strategic positioning in the marketplace.

It’s definitely an incredible project all things considered. You have to hand it to Ugra for their work!

  7. Do you think that Ugra Media will be able to make a 1991 version of the Iraqi map? The one we have now is of the present day and wouldn’t be the most accurate depiction of the Gulf War without someone like Ugra Media making a 1991 version.

    Just my opinion though.

I’m not sure why Ugra Media would make a map that Eagle Dynamics is currently developing.

      1. I suppose. I didn’t know that Eagle Dynamics was planning on doing a 1991 version of the Iraq map. Sorry about that.

To be clear, Eagle Dynamics are not doing a 1991 version of the map. However, the specific year that its set in doesn’t matter as much as the economics of it. ED is doing one so Ugra Media isn’t going to spend the substantial sums required to do their own. At best it would split people into buying one or the other and that would make both projects less financially feasible.

When considering what a company will or will not do, it always has to come down to the economics at play. It’s a good lens to evaluate next moves.

What area would you like to see and how might it factor into some common DCS scenarios?

That makes sense. It’d be quite the expansion to the east but yeah I can see the use.

  9. I think this is where the IAI Kfir (by Aviron) will serve even more of a purpose in DCS when you would like to recreate the aerial missions of the the Six Day War and Yom Kippur Wars in 1967 and 1973 respectively. I think it will fit right at home there once it’s done.

    1. Wait, my mistake, the Kfir never foght in the Six day war nor the Yom Kippur War. But still, they would serve as an integral part of the virtual Israeli Air Force of the 1970s-90s in DCS.
