The overall visual scope of the IL-2 Series Korea project is really starting to come into play now with these latest screenshots. Some readers have been quite skeptical if the new technologies were really going to make a big difference in visual quality, however, this does look quite impressive. Let’s discuss the latest Dev Blog update from 1CGS.

Natural world update

The latest developer blog goes over notes that the previous visuals of the ground were largely placeholder until the rest of the technologies and systems as well as assets could be delivered. It appears that now we are finally seeing what the project is hoping to realize with entirely new ground visual assets including trees, shrubs, rocks, grasses, and so forth.

A completely new set of textures for wild natural wilderness and agricultural zones has been developed. Whereas previously you could only see prototype solutions in the screenshots, now the entire set of landscape textures — both natural and urban — is practically complete, and you can finally observe a result that is close to the final version.

Indeed these latest shots, relative to what we’ve seen previously, really stand out and elevate the overall effect of the project. The landscape appears quite sharp and lush in their summer scenery set. Future updates are intended to show off seasons as well as urban and industrial landscapes. Hopefully that painted on look of the roads that we’ve seen before are going to evolve in all of this.

Have a look at the Developer Diary, check out the screenshots above, and let me know your thoughts in the comments.

  1. The IL-2 dev team have pretty much outdone themselves here. Good on them. Imagine if they did a remake of Moscow, Stalingrad and all the other Great Battles titles with these textures and graphics?

  2. Not bad. The clouds look very nice.

The clouds do look nice. The overall scene is really starting to come together.

  3. The grass and trees do indeed look very well-modelled, certainly a huge step forward from what we’ve seen before. If this were a hiking sim I’d be really impressed – but it isn’t. Repetition of objects means that every wall of sandbags, every Nissen hut, every individual building object, no matter where it is on the map will be identical. Sim pilots hope to spend as little time on the ground as possible; even then some fancy leaves aren’t going to cut it as much as a truly ‘organic’ and unique airfield.

Total, believable, immersion is what we all wish for, but foliage is probably low down on that list.

    Still not convinced.

Two thoughts from me on the work here. First one is that I suspect there’s still an interest in combined arms of some kind in the future so doing the work up front for believable ground is good.

The other is that while it is very much about being in the sky, I know from my DCS and MSFS low altitude flying in helicopters and slower aircraft, it’s really great to have the details. It becomes more immersive and believable. Should be good for those IL-2/F-51/future F4U ground attacks.

    2. I have spent plenty of time near the ground in IL-2, attacking ground targets, spiraling to the ground in a dogfight, running away, etc.

  4. Those clouds and vegetation. OMG. O>O

I may not get it at release but this is likely a must have item for any flight simmer.

    Stunning.
