IL-2 Series Korea transitions from early access to full release on August 4th and 1CGS seem to be very busy making sure that the new sim addresses some of its teething issues ahead of that moment. Update 0.004 is now out and available and it comes with some notable improvements across the board – but none stand out more to me than the AI changes. Let’s have a look.

Getting ready for launch?

IL-2 Series Korea is probably my most flown sim at the moment. Its fresh, its new, and there’s quite a bit to dig into. Especially now that we have the Career commander mode which I’m finding quite interesting. But it does have some rough edges and it is still technically in “early access” for a few more days.

Update 0.004 fixes game crashes, interface issues, made minor changes to the career, camera, and control systems. Aircraft are particularly big on the update list with fixes for the F-86, La-11, F-80, IL-10 and more generic fixes as well such as how the aircraft behave when ditching in the water.

But few grabbed my attention like the length list of updates for AI aircraft. 1CGS have reportedly made fixes to target tracking, rocket guidance including on targets near mountain peaks, fixed calculation distance for pulling out of a dive, improved ground target selection and search priorities, adjusted parameters for G-load, airspeed, and Mach number related maneuvring, as well as adjustments to target tracking.

That’s more AI updates than we’ve seen for years under Great Battles. It gives me a bit of hope that IL-2 Series will be able to shake the shackles of an AI system that hasn’t really ever lived up to the rest of the product. Remains to be seen if these changes are all that are planned or if there’s more to come. And we’ll have to see how these are in action.

For now, check out the change log here.
