Developer diary number 23 has come out from the Combat Pilot team detailing some of the work that the team has been busy doing recently. Control systems, key bindings, GUI, 3D pilots and more!

A bunch of work has been going on since the last Combat Pilot update. The latest changes include… the pilot! New 3D pilots have been added to the aircraft and are now in the latest alpha test. Also available is the A6M2-N “Rufe” which is the amphibious variant of the A6M Zero fighter. This is Combat Pilot’s first amphibious aircraft and considered to be a “Collector Plane” which likely means it will be an extra purchase sometime later.
Meanwhile, core work is also underway. A turbulence model has been implemented generating realistic wind gusts matching effects at different altitudes. The feature should allow for terrain shaping to effect turbulence in the future though it has not been implemented yet.
VR work is underway with work being done to add IDP settings (world scaling), a native zoom function, and Foveated rendering. Existing OpenXR layers apparently don’t work for DirectX 12 native applications so they are developing their own solution.
Finally, work is being done to refine the Combat Pilot GUI. In these screenshots you can see how the visuals are shaping up with a clean, yet vintage appearance that seems to be all the rage these days in flight sims.
