We know Deck Ops, the DLC pack for Korea IL-2 Series, is coming sometime next year and so its only fitting that we start seeing developer blogs pointed at content that is coming soon to the sim. This week, we’ve got a focus on the F9F Panther. Let’s have a look!

The Panther takes shape

Grumman’s F9F-2 Panther is a little less known than the conflicts famous Sabre and MiG-15 duo but no less important. Used by US Navy and Marines squadrons, the Panther was used for ground attack though it did manage to notch-up several air to air kills including a few against the higher performing MiG-15.

The aircraft was carrier capable, had folding wings, possessed four 20mm cannons firing from the nose, could be fitted with various bombs as well as HVAR and ATAR rockets. The dev diary also notes that it was flown by later astronaut Neil Armstrong.

As a carrier capable jet fighter, it should be an interesting aircraft to fly. Future developer diaries are going to focus on instruments and systems of this jet, other aircraft included in the Deck Ops DLC, and we’ll learn more about carrier ops too.

Check out the dev diary here.

Beautyfull, yet inferior to the main antagonist. Rough days ahead.

Btw somewhere last week Combat Pilot patched, they too have a launcher now, before starting the game aaaaaaand the b17 is flyable ☝️ Should be worth a news i’d say. Some months ago they released the rufe, as well.

What do you mean about rough days ahead?

I think I reported on the Rufe but I didn’t know the B-17 was now in. I’ll have to double check my notifications on that because I usually get notes when something interesting gets posted.

Rough days because the panther has a hard matchup against those mig15s 😉

Combat Pilot: They even added DLSS, which improved my FPS from the 10ths into the 40ths, it’s starting to get playable for me 🙂 (In VR, 2d used to work pretty well)

Yes, die B17 is in, albeit singleman and you drop bombs by TLAR. Bombbaydoors are already to be opend and closed. They were certainly not lazy, so yes, consult your sources and prepare a new article about CP. There are things to talk about 🙂

I see, I see! Yes, is now as capable in raw performance than the MiG-15, though it gave a good account of itself in the limited battles it did fight.

No new developer diaries from the Combat Pilot team but I will have a closer look at some recent changes soon.

      3. The Panther was used as a ground attacker, so it shouldn’t encounter that many MiGs.

It doesnt matter what happened in reallife, in the sim it will encounter migs, especially in multiplayer 😉

Then tell me what i am doing every friday and saturday night since the beta release? Combat Box has always something cooking. Without fail!

But maybe its the timezone, i am central europe based.

So yes the performance of human controlled migs is of big concern to me.

AI has become a joke though. The new movements are great, very much fun to fight against however the ai migs waste their advantages, so even P80 can kill them now no problem.

    2. The Panther may be somewhat inferior to the Mig-15 in speed, climb and ceiling, but that didn’t seem to stop Royce Williams single handedly shooting 4 of them down in a single engagement… 😉

      1. Yeah that’ll be some simulator goals for sure. Skill, talent, luck I’m sure played a role. Quite the battle that he had though being so completely outnumbered.

  2. the early jet age for the US Navy was quite interesting (and I’m sure extremely frustrating IRL, esp in re being outperformed by the USAF jets).

Just goes to show how much extra work it takes to make a good carrier jet vs one that always has two miles of runway! 😉

Yes, that’s absolutely the case. A jet as a carrier workhorse was a real challenge though it seems that the Panther did quite well from what I’ve been hearing about. But not as hot as the land based aircraft. An interesting time!

When I was a kid (I’m 81 now) my father took me to see the Blue Angels in Corpus Christi. They were flying the Panther.
